Three pink forms—an open bloom and two less-developed buds—gather near the upper portion of the stem, surrounded by serrated green leaves. The arrangement is airy rather than diagrammatic: the branch rises slightly off-centre, then divides into a sequence of overlapping leaves, flowers and fine thorned stems, giving the specimen both botanical clarity and a quiet sense of movement.
Redouté was among the most accomplished flower painters of the early nineteenth century, celebrated for bringing exact observation and exceptional grace to botanical illustration. His rose studies belong to a period in which the classification of plants was closely entwined with the art of their representation. Such images needed to make structure legible—the disposition of leaves, the character of the stem, the stages of flowering—yet Redouté arranged this information with the poise of a formal composition. Here, scientific attention never becomes dry: the rose is presented as a living, varied organism rather than an abstract specimen.
A closer look
The fullest flower provides the principal concentration of colour. Its petals shift through restrained pinks, from deeper folds near the centre to paler, almost translucent edges. The surrounding buds introduce different stages of development, their tighter forms contrasting with the open bloom. Rather than relying on strong outlines, Redouté builds volume through delicate tonal transitions, so that petals appear to curl, overlap and catch an even, diffused light.
The foliage supplies a more intricate counter-rhythm. Leaves spread in pointed, finely serrated clusters, with their veins carefully articulated and their greens ranging from fresh mid-tones to softer yellow-green highlights. Several overlap just above the centre, producing a modest but convincing sense of depth. Along the slender stem, small thorns interrupt the otherwise flowing contour—an easily missed detail that grounds the elegance of the flowers in the rose’s physical character.
Below, a secondary branch extends towards the lower right, carrying further leaves and a small bud. This downward movement balances the flowering cluster above without making the composition symmetrical. Generous areas of untouched pale ground allow every fork, leaf and contour to remain distinct. In the lower margin, the botanical name Rosa Rubiginosa Nemoralis is paired with the French “L’Eglantine des bois”, placing the decorative study firmly within the conventions of botanical identification.

Redouté’s reputation rests on precisely this union of disciplined scrutiny and cultivated design. Working in France at a time of intense interest in horticulture and plant classification, he helped establish a model of botanical illustration in which accuracy could coexist with softness, colour and compositional refinement. Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Every restored art print begins with the original artist’s work—never an AI-generated replacement.
Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
