Rousseau, Pl. 51, published in 1805, presents the foliage of Rhus—the genus commonly known as sumac—as a carefully ordered study in botanical variation. Rather than reconstructing a complete plant, Redouté distributes several distinct leaf forms across a pale, open ground. A broad serrated leaf dominates the left side, balanced by an elongated blue-green specimen above and smaller clusters below. The arrangement is scientific in its clarity yet notably graceful, turning comparison into composition.
Created for La botanique de J. J. Rousseau, the plate belongs to a period in which botanical illustration was central both to the classification of plants and to a widening public interest in natural history. Redouté was among the most admired botanical artists working in Paris around the turn of the nineteenth century, celebrated for combining exact observation with unusually refined colour and line. His studies never lose sight of structure—the branching vein, toothed margin or change in surface—but they also possess the visual poise for which his celebrated flower publications became known.
A closer look
The largest leaf, positioned left of centre, establishes the plate’s visual weight. Its strongly marked midrib sends finer veins towards a crisply serrated perimeter, while subtle shifts from deep to softer green suggest the shallow folds of its surface. Redouté’s modelling remains restrained: there are no theatrical shadows, only delicate tonal changes sufficient to give the leaf dimension. Its oblique angle prevents the otherwise orderly arrangement from becoming static.
At the upper right, a long, narrow leaf introduces a contrasting silhouette. Its edges are smoother, its colour cooler, moving from green towards a muted blue-green. Beneath it, the composition opens into smaller forms. Near the lower centre, five slender leaflets radiate like the points of a star; at bottom right, two rounded leaves are joined by a faintly reddish stem. Their darker, glossier surfaces provide a quiet counterpoint to the more matte, finely articulated leaf above.
Much of the plate’s elegance comes from the spaces between these specimens. The warm off-white ground isolates each outline and allows differing proportions, margins and vein patterns to be read without distraction. Fine shading suggests minute surface texture and, in places, the soft presence of hairs. Along the lower margin, the inscriptions “D’après P. J. Redouté” and “de l’Imprimerie de Langlois” preserve the publication context within the design itself.
Context and significance
Redouté’s achievement lay in making botanical precision and decorative refinement mutually reinforcing. Working before photography, illustrators such as Redouté had to communicate the identifying structures of a plant while giving readers a coherent, memorable image. Here, the comparative presentation of several leaves makes variation within Rhus immediately legible: broad against narrow, toothed against smooth, singular forms against radiating leaflets.
The plate also demonstrates why Redouté’s work has remained so compelling beyond its original educational setting. Close inspection rewards botanical curiosity—the vein networks, stems and edges are all distinctly characterised—while the measured asymmetry and restrained palette give the page an independent visual rhythm. It is an image in which classification becomes an art of looking closely.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
