The Eastern Front: Northern Section, prepared by the London Geographical Institute, captures the critical northern arc of a theater that reshaped European history. From the Gulf of Danzig and the Baltic shore through Königsberg and Tilsit to Riga, Vilna, and as far inland as Minsk and Pinsk, its meticulously differentiated colors and fine topographic detail reveal a landscape read as much by strategists as by geographers. Rivers thread through settled plains, ridges pinch movement into narrow corridors, and small towns punctuate the spaces between great cities. Created in the era when this frontier repeatedly determined the fortunes of empires, the map rewards close study, laying bare the geographic logic behind campaigns that decided borders and altered political destinies.

Nowhere is military infrastructure rendered more revealingly than in the rail lattice. Main lines radiate from Königsberg, Insterburg, Tilsit, Graudenz, and Thorn toward the east, converging upon Vilna, Dunaburg (Dvinsk), Riga, and Minsk—arteries that made rapid concentration and sudden redeployment possible. The Niemen and Pregel, carefully traced with crossings and meanders, appear not as scenic features but as operational gates, dictating where armies could thrust or must pause. Fortified nodes—Kovno and Grodno in particular, with Dvinsk on the Daugava—anchor river lines and road nets, while contour-like shading picks out the subtle uplands and valleys that channel movement between Suwalki, Kalwaria, and Šiauliai. Read as a briefing, the composition isolates the choke points where supply, time, and terrain converged.

The map’s northern focus aligns with the great offensives and counteroffensives that surged across East Prussia and the Baltic approaches. It frames the Suwalki salient and the approaches to Königsberg, the long Daugava corridor toward Riga, and the vital Vilna rail nexus—all perennial magnets for pressure in the early twentieth century. The depiction of forts around Kovno and Grodno, together with the marked bridges and junctions along the Niemen, helps explain why some thrusts stalled at river lines while others unhinged defenses by railborne flanking moves. Even the quieter spaces—lakes, forests, and marsh-lined valleys—register here as tactical facts, indicating where reconnaissance could hide, artillery could not traverse, and winter would either freeze routes open or shut them down.

Equally compelling is the political geography inscribed with exactitude. The boundary between Germany and the Russian Empire is drawn with authority, situating cities of layered identity—Riga, Danzig, Vilna—within borderlands where languages, loyalties, and laws overlapped. Place-name variants (Dunaburg/Dvinsk; Königsberg; Tilsit) hint at centuries of shifting sovereignty, from the era memorialized by the Treaty of Tilsit to the convulsions of the world wars. Maritime labels across the Gulf of Danzig underscore the commercial and naval stakes, while inland centers like Šiauliai, Bausk, Lida, and Suwalki illustrate how provincial towns became strategic hinges once rail steel and mobilization tables redefined distance.

For historians and collectors, the cartographic intelligence is the allure. One sees how the Osowskie Lakes and the coastal lowlands complicate approaches to Danzig and Elbing; how the Pregel basin opens and narrows; how the Pinsk hinterlands foreshadow the marsh belts that have long blunted grand designs. The clarity of stations, roads, and contour shading allows a reconstruction of supply dilemmas, march tempos, and likely crossing points without recourse to a single dispatch. Bringing together topography, communications, and state frontiers, this map distills the Northern Section’s enduring lesson: from Riga’s harbor to the Niemen’s banks, strategy is written first upon the land.

This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving, anniversary or housewarming gift for someone from the areas covered by this map.

This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
