An incredibly unusual map, published at an unusual time, for an unusual cause. This map, published in 1943 after the Nazi invasion of Russia, was intended to support the fundraising efforts of Russian War Relief Inc.
The map shows Russia overlaid onto the US, with Moscow on Detroit, and the Ukraine covering most of the US eastern seaboard. Minsk is in Washington D.C, Lviv is in Philadelphia, and Smolensk is in Pittsburgh. Chillingly, a Nazi flag flies from the Empire State Building. The map's title, "38,000,000 escaped - 10,000,000 died" refers to the refugees displaced by the Nazi invasion.
All in all, a fascinating map.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 60 inches (152cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24 inch (91.5x61cm) version of this map.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing post-World War 2 occupation map of Europe.
This map includes many cities from Russia and the US, including: New York, Boston, Washington, Pittsburgh, Lake Ontario, Detroit, Denver, Sale Lake City, Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Stalingrad, Kharkov, Kursk, Smolensk, Leningrad, Sevastopol and others.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from the United States of America or perhaps someone who is interested in the second World War.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
