Entitled “Napa,” this 1951 United States Geological Survey map presents the city and its surrounding California landscape with the quiet authority of mid-century scientific cartography. Published with a 1952 imprint at the detailed 1:24,000 scale, it captures Napa at a pivotal moment, before the region’s later transformation into an internationally recognized wine destination. The map distinguishes the urban grid of Napa from the open agricultural and hilly country around it, using the disciplined visual language of topography: contour lines, subtle shading, road networks, waterways, and surveyed elevations. It is at once a practical government survey and an evocative portrait of place, preserving the shape of a community still closely tied to river, valley, farmland, and road.

The United States Geological Survey brought to this map the precision for which it had become renowned since the late nineteenth century. USGS maps were made not merely to guide travelers, but to document the land with scientific reliability, serving engineers, planners, geologists, military users, and the public. In “Napa,” that mission is evident in the careful rendering of elevation, drainage, transportation routes, and settlement patterns. The cartography turns the familiar landscape into a measured terrain, where every hill slope, valley floor, and built street belongs to an ordered system of observation. The result is a map that reflects both federal technical rigor and the democratic ideal that detailed knowledge of the American landscape should be available and legible.

Napa itself occupies the heart of the sheet, arranged along the Napa River and connected by highways and local roads to the wider Bay Area landscape. State Route 29 appears as a key artery, linking the town with communities and agricultural districts to the north and south. Nearby places such as American Canyon, Carneros, Vine Hill, and the approaches toward Vallejo help situate Napa within a broader network of valley settlement, bay commerce, and rural production. The Napa River, winding through the scene, is more than a geographic feature: it is the corridor around which transportation, agriculture, and town life had long developed. The map’s roads, waterways, and clustered structures reveal a region balanced between town and countryside.

The topographical character of the map is especially compelling. Contour lines describe the rolling relief around Napa, making visible the transition from valley floor to surrounding hills and uplands such as Mount George. Shaded relief adds a sense of depth, allowing the viewer to read the landscape almost sculpturally. This is not a decorative mountain panorama, but a measured depiction of landform, with each curve of elevation contributing to an understanding of drainage, slope, and settlement. Vallejo Bay and the southern lowlands introduce a different geography of water and margin, while the inland hills frame Napa’s agricultural basin. The map’s visual clarity invites both technical study and imaginative travel across the terrain.

Historically, this map offers a remarkable snapshot of Napa before the scale of late twentieth-century development reshaped the region. Napa County Airport is present as part of the emerging modern infrastructure, while highways, roads, and urban blocks hint at the growing mobility and suburban pressures of postwar California. Yet much of the surrounding area still reads as open land, agricultural ground, and lightly developed valley country. For admirers of Napa’s later wine history, the map is especially resonant: it shows the physical stage before the global fame, tasting rooms, resort culture, and expanded viticultural identity became dominant. Here, Napa appears in an earlier register—measured, practical, and quietly poised for transformation.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
