Published in 1982 from 1966 mapping, the US Geological Survey’s “Gainesville East” captures a pivotal moment in the development of north-central Florida’s principal university city. At the precise 1:24,000 scale, the map presents Gainesville not as an abstraction, but as a richly legible landscape of streets, railroads, waterways, neighborhoods, and open ground. The University of Florida anchors the urban fabric, while residential subdivisions, parks, and civic corridors radiate into the surrounding terrain. Bold red roadways, including US Highway 441 and State Road 24, contrast with a measured green palette denoting vegetation, parkland, and low-lying terrain. The result is a meticulous government survey with the visual poise of a mid-century planning document.

The US Geological Survey brought to this map the disciplined cartographic language that made its quadrangles indispensable to engineers, planners, scientists, and travelers. Founded in the late nineteenth century, the USGS became synonymous with topographic exactitude, translating the American landscape into contour lines, hydrographic networks, transportation routes, and settlement patterns. In “Gainesville East,” that expertise is especially revealing: modest elevation changes, creek corridors, lakes, and wetlands are rendered with the quiet authority of field-based survey work. The map’s grid and coordinate references reinforce its practical purpose, yet its clarity and restraint give it an enduring aesthetic appeal. It is both a navigational instrument and a historical portrait of how Gainesville occupied the terrain around it.

Gainesville’s identity is inseparable from the University of Florida, whose presence helped define the city’s economic, cultural, and spatial growth in the decades after World War II. By the 1960s, the university was expanding alongside a broader transformation of Alachua County, as new residential areas, improved roads, and civic amenities reshaped the city’s eastern and southern margins. The map records that transitional landscape with remarkable subtlety: lots and neighborhood subdivisions appear amid larger tracts of open land, while railroads and highways suggest the older and newer infrastructures of regional connection. For collectors interested in urban history, it offers a finely detailed snapshot of Gainesville before later waves of suburban expansion altered the pattern of land use.

The surrounding natural features give “Gainesville East” much of its character. Lake Alice, long associated with the University of Florida’s campus ecology, appears within the city’s orbit, while Hogtown Creek and other drainageways thread through the landscape. To the southeast, Paynes Prairie and Alachua Lake evoke one of Florida’s most distinctive environments: a broad basin of wetlands, grasslands, and seasonal water, historically significant as both a natural landmark and a corridor of human activity. Nearby Boulware Springs recalls Gainesville’s early water history, while Newnans Lake to the east signals the region’s larger hydrological setting. These features underscore how the city’s growth was framed by springs, creeks, lakes, prairies, and wetlands rather than by streets alone.

Visually, the map exemplifies the handsome functionalism of mid-twentieth-century American topographic design. Its color scheme is purposeful and elegant: greens articulate vegetated lands and recreational spaces; blue identifies watercourses, lakes, and wetland traces; red emphasizes principal roads; black lettering and linework define buildings, railways, boundaries, and smaller routes. The contouring is restrained yet informative, describing the subtle rises and depressions of a Florida landscape often misunderstood as featureless. Kanapaha Park, neighborhood parcels, transportation corridors, and natural reserves are integrated into a coherent geographic whole. More than a record of Gainesville’s streets and landmarks, this map reveals the relationship between urban ambition and environmental setting at a moment when the modern city was taking shape.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

We work with interior designers, hospitality businesses, property professionals, offices and corporate buyers on individual pieces and larger coordinated projects.
