Its combination of contour lines and shaded relief gives unusual clarity to a famously low-lying city, where even slight changes in grade carried immense consequence for settlement, flooding, and engineering.

The United States Geological Survey brought to this map the precision and authority that made it one of the defining scientific mapping institutions of the nation. Founded to survey the geology, topography, and natural resources of the United States, the USGS developed a cartographic language that made complex landscapes legible: roads, rail lines, waterways, levees, urban blocks, and contours are carefully ordered into a practical yet elegant composition.
