Published in 1944 from 1934 survey data, the USGS topographical map titled “Dillon” captures a high-country Colorado landscape at a pivotal moment...

Published in 1944 from 1934 survey data, the USGS topographical map titled “Dillon” captures a high-country Colorado landscape at a pivotal moment before the transformative mid-century reshaping of Summit County. Centered on Dillon and Frisco, the sheet records an earlier arrangement of roads, settlements, streams, mining traces, and mountain approaches in the upper Blue River country. Its 1:62,500 scale allows the terrain to unfold with both regional sweep and local precision, from the open valley floors to the steep enclosing ridges. Particularly fascinating is its pre-reservoir context: the map preserves the geography of Dillon before the later construction of Dillon Reservoir dramatically altered the valley, making it an evocative document of a mountain community and watershed on the eve of modern change.

The United States Geological Survey brought to this map the institutional rigor that made its topographic sheets indispensable to engineers, geologists, land managers, miners, and travelers. Founded in 1879, the USGS became the national authority for measuring and depicting the American landscape, and by the early twentieth century its quadrangles had achieved a distinctive visual language of clarity and exactitude. On this Dillon sheet, contour lines carefully describe elevation, slope, and drainage, transforming the rugged mountain country into a legible system of ridges, basins, canyons, and passes. Watercourses are rendered with equal care, emphasizing the relationship between settlement and hydrology. The result is not merely a practical survey, but a refined portrait of Colorado’s alpine terrain, shaped by scientific observation and cartographic discipline.

Frisco and Dillon occupy a dramatic setting between the Tenmile Range and the Blue River drainage, where transportation corridors, mining activity, and mountain geography converge. Ten Mile Canyon appears as one of the great natural routes through the region, channeling movement through steep walls and narrow grades toward Copper Mountain and beyond. Frisco Creek and Tenmile Creek trace the lifelines of the valley, while the Blue River organizes the broader landscape, tying together ranching ground, townsites, and later transportation development. U.S. Route 6 and Colorado State Highway 9 reflect the growing importance of automobile travel through the Rockies, linking old mining districts and mountain communities to Denver, Leadville, and the Western Slope. The map thus records both remoteness and connection.

The surrounding peaks and uplands give the Dillon quadrangle its powerful topographic character. Mount Buffalo, Copper Mountain, Shrine Mountain, and neighboring ridges rise in closely spaced contour intervals, their forms emphasized by hachures and shaded relief that lend the sheet an almost sculptural quality. This is a landscape of abrupt elevation change, where forested slopes, alpine basins, creek valleys, and high passes create a complex mountain architecture. The harmonious palette used by the USGS distinguishes water, relief, roads, and cultural features without overwhelming the eye, allowing the viewer to read both the beauty and severity of the terrain. Adjacent forests and wilderness-like areas hint at the enduring wildness of the region, even as roads and mining remnants mark human ambition.

Historically, the map is especially compelling because it documents Summit County after the great nineteenth-century mining booms but before the rise of the modern recreation economy and the creation of Dillon Reservoir. Old mining sites scattered through the mountains recall the era when prospectors pushed into gulches and high basins in search of silver, gold, and other minerals. At the same time, the presence of established highways and settled towns points toward a new chapter of access, tourism, and regional development. Later urban expansion, ski-area growth around places such as Copper Mountain, highway improvements, and the inundation associated with the reservoir would profoundly change the landscape. This 1934-surveyed Dillon map preserves the earlier geography with remarkable authority and understated elegance.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
