Published in 1959 from 1958 mapping, the US Geological Survey’s “Columbus” presents a finely observed portrait of Columbus, Indiana, at a moment of postwar transition. At the classic 1:24,000 topographic scale, the map captures the city’s gridded streets, emerging road network, waterways, wooded ground, and surrounding agricultural land with the disciplined clarity for which the USGS is renowned. Urban areas are distinguished from open countryside, while contour lines quietly reveal the underlying shape of Bartholomew County’s terrain. The result is both practical and evocative: a mid-century survey of a county seat growing outward from its historic core, yet still closely bound to the rivers, lowlands, and rural fields that define south-central Indiana.

The United States Geological Survey brought to this map nearly eight decades of institutional expertise in measuring and interpreting the American landscape. Established in 1879, the USGS became the nation’s authoritative source for topographic mapping, natural-resource assessment, and later, hazards research. Its maps are admired not merely for accuracy, but for their elegantly standardized visual language: brown contours for elevation, blue waterways, black cultural features, green wooded areas, and carefully differentiated road classes. In “Columbus,” that system transforms an everyday Midwestern landscape into a layered document of settlement, hydrology, transportation, and relief. Every creek, bridge, road junction, and contour interval contributes to a precise visual record of how the city and its surroundings functioned in the late 1950s.

Columbus itself appears as the commanding center of the sheet, its street grid and built-up districts contrasted with the open agricultural lands beyond. The map records an era when American towns were being reshaped by automobile travel, suburban growth, and upgraded state highways. State Road 46, State Road 11, and State Road 7 stand out as key arteries, linking the city to surrounding communities and wider regional routes. Their presence speaks to Columbus’s role as both a local commercial hub and a node in Indiana’s expanding transportation network. The gridded intersections and planned alignments reflect civic order, while the gradual thinning of streets toward the outskirts suggests the edge between established urban life and the rural landscape still close at hand.

Water gives the map much of its character. The White River and Haw Creek shape the western and central portions of the Columbus landscape, marking low ground, drainage corridors, and natural boundaries that influenced both settlement and recreation. Mill Race Park, associated with the riverine landscape, hints at the city’s longstanding relationship with floodplain, parkland, and public open space. The blue tracery of streams contrasts with the rectilinear geometry of streets and roads, emphasizing the negotiation between engineered infrastructure and natural systems. Contours around these waterways reveal subtle hills and valleys, helping the viewer understand why development gathered where it did, and why certain corridors remained open, wooded, or agricultural.

As a historical document, “Columbus” preserves a city on the cusp of dramatic modern recognition. In the decades after this map, Columbus would become internationally admired for its modern architecture and enlightened civic patronage, but this 1958 survey records the underlying townscape before later transformations fully took hold. It shows the roads, neighborhoods, waterways, and land-use patterns that formed the stage for subsequent growth. For collectors, the appeal lies in this layered perspective: the map is at once a technical survey, a snapshot of mid-century Indiana, and a quiet study of the relationship between town planning and terrain. Its precise cartography invites close reading, rewarding attention with the textures of a living landscape in time.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
