Titled “Linville” and dated 1944, this US Geological Survey map presents one of North Carolina’s most dramatic Appalachian landscapes at a 1:62,500 scale. Centered on the high country around Linville, Banner Elk, Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountain, and Grandfather Mountain, it captures the region before the full flowering of modern resort development and year-round tourism infrastructure. The map’s dense contour work reveals a landscape of steep ascents, folded ridges, narrow valleys, and headwater streams, rendered with the disciplined clarity characteristic of mid-twentieth-century USGS topographic mapping. More than a geographic document, it is a portrait of the Blue Ridge at a transitional moment, when mountain communities, forested slopes, and winding rural routes still defined the character of this celebrated corner of western North Carolina.

The US Geological Survey brought a distinctive rigor to maps such as this, combining field observation, established survey methods, and a standardized visual language designed for practical use and scientific reliability. In “Linville,” that language becomes especially expressive: contour lines crowd tightly around the flanks of Beech Mountain, Sugar Mountain, and Grandfather Mountain, translating elevation into an elegant graphic rhythm. Roads, trails, streams, settlements, and ridgelines are arranged with restrained precision, allowing the complexity of the terrain to emerge without ornament. The result is both utilitarian and beautiful, a map whose design reflects the USGS ideal that accurate measurement could also produce a refined visual record of the American landscape.

Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain, today closely associated with skiing, second homes, hiking, and panoramic tourism, appear here in a quieter historical guise. The 1944 map predates many of the large-scale recreational and residential developments that would later transform these peaks into major destinations. Their slopes are shown primarily as terrain—ridges, coves, drainage lines, and upland routes—rather than as resort landscapes. This makes the map especially compelling for anyone interested in the earlier identity of North Carolina’s High Country. Banner Elk and Linville anchor the human geography, while the surrounding mountains dominate the composition, reminding the viewer that settlement in this region was shaped by elevation, weather, water, and the practical challenges of movement through rugged country.

Grandfather Mountain provides one of the map’s great geographic presences, rising as a landmark of both natural grandeur and regional identity. Its massive profile, long celebrated for its ecological richness and commanding views, is expressed here through the tight geometry of contours and adjoining drainage patterns. Nearby waterways, including Wilson’s Creek and the broader network of mountain streams, reveal how the terrain channels water through steep valleys and wooded ravines. Watauga Lake and the surrounding highland features situate the sheet within the greater Appalachian watershed, where ridges often form boundaries between communities as much as between drainage basins. The map rewards close study, offering a richly layered view of how mountains, water, roads, and settlements intertwine.

As a historical document, “Linville” preserves a version of the North Carolina mountains that has changed profoundly since 1944. Later decades brought expanded highways, ski areas, vacation homes, tourism amenities, and growing recognition of the region’s outdoor appeal. Yet the essential drama of the land—the steep grades, sharp ridges, forested hollows, and elevated plateaus—remains powerfully legible in this topographic rendering. Its classic USGS styling gives the map an understated authority, while the subject matter lends it romance: a beloved Appalachian landscape shown with clarity before its modern reinvention. For admirers of mountain geography, North Carolina history, or the art of topographic mapping, it offers a deeply evocative window into the High Country’s enduring terrain.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

We work with interior designers, hospitality businesses, property professionals, offices and corporate buyers on individual pieces and larger coordinated projects.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
