A beautiful and unusual world map, originally published by Blondel La Rougery in Paris in 1956. Drawn in the style of ancient maps, this map is adorned with interesting illustrations - ships in the sea, whales (sea monsters!), indigenous peoples, and crops or resources produced.
In a nice twist, small clock faces along the top and bottom edges of the map even show the world's different time zones. Please note that some labels on this map are in French, such as the sea and ocean names. Most city names are in their local language - for example "London", and "Moskva" (Moscow).
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 180 inches (457cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24 inch (91.5x61cm) version of this map.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing map of the world by Macdonald Gill in 1942.
Unlike other world maps, this one doesn't have many country labels. Instead, the major cities of each country are shown, such as Liverpool, Napoli, Madrid, Porto, Tokyo, Manila, Bangkok, Calcutta, Bombay and the many cities of the United States. Dotted around the maps are also famous animals and landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, the Egyptian pyramids, penguins and the Australian Kangaroos.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone who loves to travel or someone who loves to explore!
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
