The U.S. Geological Survey’s “Cave Creek Quadrangle” presents one of Arizona’s most evocative desert communities with the precision and restraint that define American topographical mapping. Dated 2004 and issued with a 2007 imprint, the map captures Cave Creek and Carefree at a revealing moment in the early twenty-first century, when rural desert settlement, resort development, and protected open space were increasingly intertwined. At the 1:24,000 scale, the quadrangle offers an intimate view of roads, washes, contours, and named places, allowing the viewer to read the landscape almost as one might walk it. Its subject is a distinctive portion of the northern Phoenix metropolitan edge, where suburban expansion meets the rugged terrain of the Sonoran Desert.

Produced by the U.S. Geological Survey, the map belongs to a cartographic tradition rooted in scientific accuracy, civic utility, and understated elegance. USGS quadrangles are celebrated for their standardized symbology: contour lines articulate elevation, blue traces mark drainage and water features, and carefully graded linework distinguishes roads, boundaries, and developed areas. Here, that disciplined visual language is especially effective, because the Cave Creek area is shaped by abrupt rises, shallow valleys, desert foothills, and braided washes. The contouring gives the map a sculptural quality, translating the region’s rocky hills and descending desert slopes into a fine network of measured lines. It is a map that rewards both practical reading and aesthetic contemplation.

Cave Creek and Carefree appear as neighboring yet distinct settlements, each set within a landscape that has long balanced habitation with desert character. Cave Creek Road, one of the area’s defining corridors, anchors the human geography of the quadrangle, linking communities, trailheads, residences, and open lands. Around it, the map records the subtle complexity of the terrain: washes cutting across the desert floor, ridgelines enclosing pockets of settlement, and contours revealing the rise and fall of surrounding hills. Cave Creek Regional Park is among the notable places represented, standing as a reminder of the region’s recreational and ecological importance. The map’s detail makes visible how roads and development adapt to, rather than fully conquer, the desert topography.

As a historical document, the 2004-dated “Cave Creek Quadrangle” is particularly valuable for showing land use patterns in the mid-2000s, a period of substantial growth across the greater Phoenix region. Cave Creek and Carefree had already developed strong identities as desert communities, yet they remained closely tied to questions of conservation, water management, and controlled expansion. The map records this balance with quiet authority, showing the built environment alongside the natural corridors and rugged spaces that shaped it. For historians, planners, and collectors, it offers a snapshot of a landscape in transition: no longer remote, yet still defined by open desert, parkland, washes, and the dramatic relief of nearby mountains.

The enduring appeal of this quadrangle lies in the way it transforms a familiar Arizona landscape into a carefully ordered field of geographic intelligence. Hills and valleys are not merely suggested but measured; roads are not simply routes but evidence of settlement patterns; washes and drainage lines reveal how water moves through an arid environment. The map invites close study of the relationship between people and place, especially in a region where desert beauty, residential growth, and natural resource management have long been inseparable. With its precise contours and authoritative USGS design, the “Cave Creek Quadrangle” is both a functional topographical record and a refined portrait of the northern Sonoran Desert at a pivotal modern moment.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
