Fine green stems rise through an expanse of warm, pale ground, carrying feathery foliage and small yellow flowers edged or touched with red. The plant’s narrow vertical reach gives the composition its elegance, while the generous space around it keeps every fork, bud and leaf structure clearly legible.
The plate was produced for a publication devoted to rare plants cultivated at Malmaison and Navarre, placing it within the early nineteenth century’s lively culture of botanical collecting and elite gardens. Redouté—celebrated as the “Raphael of flowers”—was particularly admired for reconciling scientific scrutiny with decorative refinement. His plants are isolated for close study, yet never appear merely diagrammatic: restrained modelling, precise contours and luminous colour give them presence as living forms.
A closer look
The principal stem begins low in the composition and divides as it ascends, its slight curves preventing the arrangement from becoming rigid. Along these delicate branches, fine linear leaves form soft, fern-like passages of green. Their density increases beneath the flowers, creating a textural transition from the spare lower stem to the more intricate crown of the plant. Pale vein-like marks and subtle changes of green suggest the effects of light without obscuring the specimen’s structure.
Near the top, the small blossoms provide the strongest concentration of colour. Clear yellow petals are sharpened by red accents, producing vivid points against the neutral background. Green buds among the foliage introduce an additional stage of growth, so that the plate records not only the open flower but the plant’s developing forms. The blossoms possess slight volume through delicate tonal shading, yet the composition remains airy, with minimal cast shadow and no surrounding landscape or setting.
Scientific detail continues along the lower edge, where separate plant parts—including seed-like forms and a slender, finely haired branch—are set apart for closer inspection. These subsidiary studies reward careful viewing: tiny hairs, narrow outlines and minute variations in texture extend the plate beyond a single ornamental portrait. Beneath the specimen, the flowing script of the label “Comphobolium furcellatum” becomes part of the composition, its graceful line echoing the curves of the stems above.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
