Engraved by John Rapkin and published by J. Tallis & Co in 1851, this is one of the finest and most detailed historic maps of the trade routes between Europe and India at the height of the Victorian Era and the British Empire.
Finished in beautiful, original handcolouring, this map shows some of the main overland routes from Europe to India. The top half of the map shows the European stretch; the lower half shows the route through the Red Sea and Arabian Sea to Bombay in Hindoostan (respectively Mumbai and India today).
Gorgeously detailed illustrations of landmarks and cities adorn the edges of the map, including Madras, Bombay, the Suez canal, Malta, and the Post Office in London. There's even a nice line of camels - "the mail crossing the desert".
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 70 inches (180cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (61x45.5cm) version of this map.

Many of the towns, villages and cities of Europe and India can be seen on this map.
The locations on this map include countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Portugal, Holland, Italy, Germany, Austria, Turkey, Greece and Russia. At the bottom, you can see Arabia, India (Hindoostan), Turkey, Syria, Persia, Afghanistan, Pakistan (Beloochistan) and Nepal.
Most major cities such as London, Paris, Madrid, Lisbon, Mecca, Munich, Rotterdam, Rome, Delhi, and Sicily are visible on this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone who has a keen interest in the history of trade around Europe or someone who enjoys very detailed maps.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
