A fascinating map of the New York Subway System, originally published in 1954 as a jigsaw puzzle created by Stephen Voorhies for Union Dime Savings Bank. This map was published just after unification of multiple NYC transit systems under the public New York City Transit Authority, or MTA as it's known today.
As you can see, most of New York's subway system was already complete by 1954 - though they had quite different names, such as the IND Division, IRT Division and BMT Division. These networks would later be renamed to the alphabetical lines that you know today. The Sixth Ave line is here though!
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 50 inches (125cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24 inch (91.5x61cm) version of this map.
If you’re looking for more options, I have another interesting map of New York by the Ohman Map Co. in 1927.
Of course, most of New York City's most famous areas are already visible on this map.
The locations on this map include: Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, The Bronx, Harlem River, Hudson River, East River and North River.
You can see famous landmarks such as Central Park, Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge and Washington Square Park.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from New York or perhaps someone who has been there on holiday.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
