This Victorian masterpiece map of France and France's Foreign Possessions, with its rich original handcolouring, was first published in 1872 by A. Fullarton & Co. in its seminal Royal Illustrated Atlas. The map was engraved by G.H Swanston and is notable for being the last great highly decorative world atlas.
The map also includes seven of France's foreign possessions, such as French Guiana, Bourbon (Réunion) and Martinique. You can also see the rivers that flow through the country, such as the River Seine, the Loire and the Garonne river.
This relief-style map shows the number of mountains across France, especially towards the South East of the country, where you can see where the Alps are and where the three countries of France, Switzerland and Italy meet. Take a closer look and you can even spot Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in Western Europe.
Some of the locations on this map include: Paris, Nice, Lyon, Bordeaux, Marseille, Strasbourg, Lille, Aix-en-Provence, Rouen, Toulouse, Montpellier, Nantes, Algeria, Martinique and Corsica.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16in (30.5x41cm), 16x20in (40.5x51cm), 18x24in (45.5x61cm), 24x30in (61x76cm), 32x40in (81.5x102cm), 40x50in (102x127cm), 48x60in (122x153cm) and 56x70in (142x178cm), but it looks best at larger sizes.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 70in (178cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 20x16in (50.8x40.7cm) version of this map.
The fifth listing image shows an example of my map personalisation service.
Please note the unframed 24x30in (61x76cm) map has white edges around the map. These edges can help you with framing, or if you don’t need them they are very easy to snip off with scissors. All other maps, including the framed maps, look exactly like the listing images.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing map of France by John Tallis & Co and John Rapkin in 1851.

This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone interested in France and France's Foreign Possessions or someone who has France close to their heart.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
