This is an exceedingly rare, old full colour map of the ancient county of West Yorkshire (then called the West Riding of Yorkshire) created by master mapmaker Joan Blaeu from his workshop in Amsterdam and originally published in this Theatrum Orbis Terrarum Sive Atlas Novus in 1665.
Originally handcoloured almost 400 years ago, this is one of the finest examples of this map that I've ever seen.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 37x50 inches (94x127cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 20x16 inch (50x40cm) version of this map.
If you’re looking for more options, I have another
interesting Yorkshire map by Joan Blaeu in 1665. The West Riding of Yorkshire roughly corresponds to all of West Yorkshire and parts of North Yorkshire today and contains all of the big cities that now populate the metropolitan county of West Yorkshire: York, Bradford, Sheffield, Leeds, Wakefield, Calderdale (Halifax) and Kirklees (Huddersfield).
Most of West Yorkshire's most populous towns and cities have already popped into existence by the 1600s. Here are some of the West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire places clearly visible in this old map: Skipton, Knaresborough, Harrogate, Selby, Tadcaster, Halifax, Wetherby, Pontefract, Wakefield, Rotherham, Doncaster, Otley, Batley, Dewsbury, Keighley, Castleford, Brighouse, Pudsey, Morley, Shipley, Bingley, and many more. But of course, many of them are spelt in their Early Modern English forms.
Take a look at the detailed images and try to spot your hometown! Feel free to message me if you want to confirm if a certain West Yorkshire town or village is on this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas,
Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from West Riding or has Yorkshire in their heart.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
