WeiterlesenPublished in 1977 from 1970 survey work, the US Geological Survey’s “Warren” presents a finely observed portrait of central Vermont at a moment when rural mountain landscapes were beginning to meet the expanding culture of recreation and tourism. At 1:24,000 scale, it renders the terrain around Warren with the precision that made USGS quadrangles indispensable to planners, hikers, foresters, engineers, and local residents. The map’s disciplined visual language—contour lines, elevation marks, watercourses, woodland tinting, roads, and trails—transforms the Green Mountain landscape into a readable and elegant system. Warren itself appears not as an isolated village, but as part of a broader upland geography shaped by ridges, valleys, forests, and the deep seasonal rhythms of Vermont.
The US Geological Survey, founded in the late nineteenth century, became the United States’ preeminent authority on topographic mapping, combining scientific rigor with practical utility. Its quadrangle maps were created not merely to describe land, but to make it intelligible: to show where water flowed, where slopes steepened, where roads climbed, and where human settlement adapted to terrain. In the “Warren” sheet, that mission is especially apparent. The mapmaker’s neutral, exacting style allows the drama of the landscape to emerge through measurement rather than embellishment. Every contour is part of a larger choreography of mountain and valley, revealing why this region has long attracted those interested in farming, forestry, skiing, conservation, and backcountry exploration.
Warren, Vermont, lies in the Mad River Valley, a region celebrated for its pastoral beauty, covered-bridge charm, and proximity to some of the state’s most beloved mountain recreation. The Mad River itself provides a defining natural axis, winding through the landscape and linking communities whose histories were shaped by waterpower, agriculture, and road access through difficult upland country. Nearby State Route 100, one of Vermont’s iconic north–south roads, appears as more than a transportation line: it is a cultural corridor through villages, farms, forests, and ski country. The map captures this relationship between movement and topography, showing how roads and settlements thread carefully through valleys while mountains rise in layered contours on either side.
The surrounding terrain is the true protagonist of this map. Rolling hills tighten into steeper mountain forms, valleys open and narrow, and waterways such as the Mad River and Green River trace the logic of the land. Roxbury State Forest, Pike Hill, Granville, and Northfield situate Warren within a broader Green Mountain setting of wooded uplands and scattered rural communities. The distinctive green palette, used to indicate woodland and vegetated terrain, gives the sheet both clarity and atmosphere, while dense contouring communicates the physicality of ascent and descent. Trails, elevation points, and hydrographic symbols invite close reading, making the map as useful for imagining a hike or ski approach as for understanding the region’s natural structure.
The inclusion of Sugarbush Ski Area places the map within an important chapter of Vermont’s twentieth-century transformation. By 1970, ski resorts and outdoor recreation were reshaping the economies and identities of many mountain towns, bringing new visitors, second homes, conservation debates, and infrastructure to landscapes long associated with farming and forestry. This map preserves that transitional moment with quiet authority. It hints at a Warren still deeply rural, yet increasingly connected to modern leisure and regional development. Since its survey, the area has continued to evolve through tourism, land protection, and changing patterns of settlement. As a historical document, the map offers not only geographic information, but a richly textured view of Vermont poised between tradition and reinvention.

With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
