WeiterlesenPublished in 1957 from survey data gathered in 1956, the United States Geological Survey’s “Cherokee” presents a richly detailed mid-century portrait of Llano, Texas, and the surrounding Hill Country landscape. At a scale of 1:62,500, it captures both the human and natural geography of the region with the precision for which the USGS is renowned. Llano appears as the principal settlement, set within a broader network of roads, rail lines, creeks, river crossings, and rural terrain. The map’s green and brown palette elegantly distinguishes vegetation from relief, while contour lines trace the rising and falling ground around the town. It is a cartographic record of Central Texas at a moment when modern infrastructure was expanding but the rural character of the region remained strongly visible.
The landscape shown here belongs to the rugged heart of the Texas Hill Country, where granite outcrops, low mountains, winding streams, and open valleys define the terrain. The Llano River forms one of the map’s central natural features, threading through the region and shaping settlement, agriculture, and transportation routes. Sandy Creek, smaller tributaries, and scattered bodies of water add further texture, revealing a drainage pattern closely tied to the area’s rocky geology and periodic rainfall. The contouring conveys a varied topography of unnamed hills, ridgelines, and shallow valleys, making the map especially evocative for those who know the region’s distinctive sense of space. This is a landscape neither flat nor mountainous, but subtly dramatic, with elevations and waterways guiding every road and community.
The US Geological Survey brought a distinctive authority to maps such as this, combining field survey, geodetic control, and standardized symbology into a clear and dependable visual language. By the 1950s, USGS topographic sheets had become indispensable tools for engineers, planners, geologists, travelers, and landowners, offering an exacting view of the American landscape. On “Cherokee,” roads and highways are differentiated by line style, railways follow their own precise conventions, and developed areas are rendered with quiet restraint. The result is not merely a navigational document but a layered inventory of land use, movement, and settlement. The map reflects an era when federal mapping sought to describe the country comprehensively, turning local terrain into part of a national geographic archive.
Llano itself occupies a place of particular interest within the map, both as a town and as a gateway to the surrounding ranching, mining, and agricultural country. Founded in the nineteenth century and long associated with cattle, granite, and frontier settlement, Llano developed along transportation corridors shaped by the river and the contours of the land. The map records the town’s mid-twentieth-century footprint before later suburban growth and roadway changes altered the area’s appearance. Residential and commercial patterns are suggested through the urban layout, while roads radiate into the countryside, linking farms, crossings, and smaller communities. The inclusion of railways hints at earlier phases of economic development, when rail transport played a critical role in moving stone, livestock, and goods through Central Texas.
As a historical document, “Cherokee” offers a compelling snapshot of Llano County and its environs in the postwar period, before many later changes in land use, infrastructure, recreation, and development took hold. Parks and natural reserves are indicated with green shading, while open country, hills, and river corridors dominate the composition. The map invites comparison between past and present: roads may have been realigned, settlements expanded, and rural parcels transformed, yet the underlying geography remains legible in the rivers, slopes, and valleys. Its appeal lies in this combination of accuracy and atmosphere. It is at once a scientific survey and a portrait of place, preserving the rhythms of a Central Texas landscape as they appeared in 1956.

The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth.

Published in 1957 from survey data gathered in 1956, the United States Geological Survey’s “Cherokee” presents a richly detailed mid-century portrait of Llano, Texas, and the surrounding Hill Country landscape.
