WeiterlesenPublished with a 1953 imprint and dated 1942, the US Geological Survey’s “Corvallis” presents a finely measured mid-century portrait of Oregon’s central Willamette Valley. Drawn at a scale of 1:62,500, it places Corvallis at the center of a landscape shaped by river corridors, cultivated lowlands, wooded hills, and the orderly geometry of roads and railways. The map belongs to the USGS tradition of authoritative topographic surveying, in which scientific precision and visual clarity combine to make terrain immediately legible. Its contour lines and subtle gradient coloration reveal elevation, drainage, and slope, transforming the surrounding countryside into a readable relief model of valleys, uplands, and settlement patterns as they stood in the early 1940s.
Corvallis appears here not merely as a town, but as an urban anchor within a larger regional system of farms, transport routes, waterways, and foothill country. The city’s position near important riverine and valley landscapes is central to the map’s character, illustrating why settlement developed where it did: on accessible ground, near water, and along routes connecting the Willamette Valley’s communities. Streets, roads, and rail lines trace the infrastructure of a working mid-century Oregon town, while the surrounding valleys and hills show the strong relationship between human activity and physical geography. The result is a map that captures Corvallis at a moment before later suburban expansion transformed its edges and transportation network.
The US Geological Survey, established in the nineteenth century, became one of America’s most influential scientific mapping institutions, producing maps that served engineers, planners, land managers, hikers, soldiers, and citizens alike. This “Corvallis” sheet reflects that mission with a restrained but highly informative cartographic language: elevations are communicated through tight contouring, transport corridors are cleanly distinguished, and waterways organize the terrain with quiet authority. Unlike decorative atlas maps, USGS topographic sheets were built for use, yet their elegance lies precisely in that functional exactness. Every line serves a purpose, from the delineation of ridges and draws to the placement of roads, railways, and settled places.
The topographic character of the region gives the map much of its visual appeal. Around Corvallis, the relatively open valley floor gives way to nearby hills, wooded areas, and more irregular ground, all articulated through the rhythmic pattern of contour lines. These contours allow the viewer to sense the rise and fall of the land, the transition from cultivated lowlands to upland margins, and the way water has carved and organized the landscape. The gradient shading enhances this impression, lending depth to an otherwise measured scientific document. Parks, forests, and natural features surrounding the urban area contribute to a rich impression of a city embedded in a varied Oregon landscape.
As a historical document, this map offers a compelling snapshot of Corvallis and its environs during the World War II era, later reissued with the 1953 imprint. It records a landscape before many postwar changes: expanded highways, residential growth, altered land use, and the shifting boundaries between town and countryside. Railways and older road alignments speak to transportation priorities of the period, while the comparatively compact urban footprint reveals Corvallis before later decades of development. For anyone interested in Oregon history, urban evolution, or the cartographic record of the Willamette Valley, this map is a precise and evocative window into the region’s mid-twentieth-century geography.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Published with a 1953 imprint and dated 1942, the US Geological Survey’s “Corvallis” presents a finely measured mid-century portrait of Oregon’s central Willamette Valley.
