Samuel Augustus Mitchell’s Map of the Roman Empire at the Period of Its Greatest Extent (1865) offers a lucid, comprehensive vision of imperial power around A.D. 107, when Rome’s dominion stretched from the Atlantic to the Euphrates and from the Scottish lowlands to the Sahara. Created for Mitchell’s New Reference Atlas—an exemplar of educational cartography—it balances scholarship with clarity, delineating provinces in distinct hues and labeling the chief cities that animated Roman commerce and governance. Roma, Alexandria, Carthage, Antioch, and Ephesus anchor the composition, while the Mediterranean Sea—Rome’s “Mare Nostrum”—knits the provinces into a single maritime system. The elegant title cartouche and compass rose underscore a mid-19th-century ideal: that historical geography should be both authoritative and visually compelling.

The map’s political anatomy is meticulous. Provincial borders in Hispania and Gallia are crisply divided, while Italy radiates outward toward the fortified limes on the Rhine and Danube, where legions guarded the empire’s most volatile thresholds. North Africa’s arc from Cyrene to Carthage appears as the grain-rich foundation of Rome’s food security, balanced by the wealth of the Levant around Caesarea, Ptolemais, and Jerusalem. An inset of Britannia Romanorum isolates the island’s geography, highlighting Londinium’s strategic position amid river systems and maritime access. Seen together, these divisions do more than organize space; they reveal the administrative logic that made provincial governance and rapid military response possible across an immense, culturally diverse realm.

Relief is rendered through fine hachures that lend the terrain a palpable structure, bringing strategic geography into focus. The Alps and Apennines frame Italy’s heartland; the Pyrenees separate Gallia from Hispania; the Taurus and Anti-Taurus ranges define Anatolia’s corridors; and the Atlas Mountains shape African coastal settlement. Such topographic nuance clarifies why frontiers followed the Rhine and Danube and why Dacia, north of the lower Danube, was both prize and burden after Trajan’s campaigns. Major rivers—the Tiber, Rhine, Danube, and Nile’s deltaic approaches to Alexandria—emerge as arteries of supply and communication. Ports like Massalia, Aquileia, and Tarentum punctuate a web of sea-lanes that sustained trade, taxation, and troop movement across the Mediterranean world.

Historically, the map captures an inflection point of imperial scale and ambition. Around A.D. 107, Rome had consolidated Dacia, secured Egypt’s grain lifeline, and asserted preeminence in the eastern Mediterranean from Ephesus to Antioch and Tarsus. Cities such as Athens and Trier signal the coexistence of inherited Greek civic traditions and Roman administrative rigor, illuminating an empire knit by law and logistics as much as by conquest. Notably, the inclusion of names familiar to 19th-century readers—such as Constantinople—reflects contemporary cartographic practice, bridging ancient toponyms and modern usage to support instruction. This interplay between classical antiquity and Victorian scholarship makes the sheet a telling witness to how the past was taught, standardized, and imagined in the era of grand atlases.

Mitchell’s artistry lies in the union of accuracy and pedagogy. Engraved detail, clear province coloring, and disciplined labeling embody the 19th-century drive to elevate geography into a precise, teachable science. The elegant cartouche and compass rose provide a dignified frame for information that remains immediately legible: from Hispalis and Massalia on the western arc to Nicomedia and Caesarea in the east, and from Londinium to Cyrene across Rome’s maritime highways. As Map No. 49 in his reference atlas, it distills an empire’s narrative—frontiers, cities, and natural barriers—into a coherent study of power, economy, and culture, offering today’s viewer both historical insight and the refined clarity of a master cartographer.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
