Continua a leggerePublished in 1959 from 1957 mapping, the US Geological Survey’s “Waupaca” presents a finely observed portrait of central Wisconsin at mid-century. Centered on the populated place of Waupaca, the map extends across a landscape of lakes, rivers, forests, rural roads, rail lines, and small settlements, capturing the region before later waves of suburban growth and recreational development reshaped parts of the countryside. Its 1:48,000 scale gives the map a generous regional sweep while retaining the intimate detail of township roads, watercourses, and community patterns. Especially notable is its planimetric character: rather than emphasizing dense contouring, it privileges the clear arrangement of natural and human features, making the geography immediately legible.
The map was produced by the US Geological Survey, the federal scientific agency whose topographic sheets became indispensable tools for engineers, planners, conservationists, educators, and travelers. By the 1950s, USGS mapping had evolved into a rigorous national language of place, combining standardized symbols with careful field and aerial survey work. This Waupaca sheet belongs to that postwar era of practical, data-rich cartography, when maps served both governmental planning and the public’s growing appetite for outdoor recreation. Its restrained visual style reflects the USGS commitment to accuracy: roads, drainage, vegetation, settlements, and transportation corridors are presented with clarity rather than ornament, creating a map that is both utilitarian and quietly elegant.
Water defines the character of this landscape. Waupaca’s famed Chain O’ Lakes appears among a constellation of blue features, including Crystal Lake, Otter Lake, Big Lake, Little Lake, Lake Parlin, and Pine Lake. The Fox, Wolf, and Waupaca rivers help organize the regional geography, linking lake country, wetlands, wooded tracts, and agricultural lands. These waterways were long central to settlement, transport, fishing, milling, and recreation, and by the late 1950s they had become part of Waupaca’s identity as a destination for boating and lakeside leisure. The map’s blue hydrography stands out against green vegetation and pale land areas, emphasizing the intricate relationship between water, forest, and rural habitation.
Beyond Waupaca itself, the map records a network of surrounding communities and rural townships, including Iola, Manawa, and the Township of Waupaca. Roads and highways trace the practical patterns of everyday movement, while railroads, where shown, point to earlier industrial and agricultural connections. The late-1950s landscape revealed here is one of small-town centers, farmsteads, woodlots, lakeside enclaves, and open country, a geography shaped by both natural abundance and human use. In historical terms, the sheet offers a valuable snapshot of land use before subsequent decades brought expanded highways, changing agricultural practices, modern conservation policies, and increasing demand for waterfront property and outdoor recreation.
Cartographically, “Waupaca” is appealing for its balance of precision and readability. The classic USGS palette—greens for wooded or vegetated areas, blues for lakes and streams, and crisp linework for roads and settlements—creates an orderly visual hierarchy that rewards close study. Its planimetric emphasis gives particular prominence to the layout of the region: the spacing of lakes, the branching of roads, the course of rivers, and the distribution of forests and rural communities. For collectors drawn to Wisconsin history, Midwestern lake country, or the golden age of American survey mapping, this is a richly informative view of Waupaca at a defining moment in the twentieth century.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
