The 1943 United States Geological Survey map titled “Montreat” presents a finely detailed topographical portrait of a dramatic corner of western North Carolina, where the Blue Ridge rises steeply above the Swannanoa Valley. Drawn at the precise 1:24,000 scale, it records Montreat, Black Mountain, and the surrounding highlands at a moment when this mountain retreat was already well established yet still closely bound to its rugged natural setting. The map’s close contouring immediately communicates the steepness of the terrain, while roads, trails, streams, and settled areas are carefully woven into the landscape. As both a scientific document and a historical snapshot, it captures the relationship between a small Appalachian community, its religious and educational institutions, and the enveloping mountain country that shaped its identity.

Montreat itself is the heart of the map, nestled in a narrow mountain basin and long associated with the Presbyterian Church through the Montreat Conference Center. Founded as a retreat and gathering place, the community developed around the idea that mountain seclusion could offer spiritual renewal, education, and fellowship. Lake Susan, one of Montreat’s defining features, appears as a focal point within the settlement, surrounded by roads and buildings that suggest the orderly development of a planned retreat community. The map allows the viewer to see how Montreat’s built environment occupied only a small portion of the surrounding terrain, with forested slopes, ridgelines, and watercourses pressing close on every side, reinforcing the sense of enclosure and sanctuary.

Beyond Montreat, the map opens onto a richly contoured mountain landscape, including Greybeard Mountain, Chestnut Ridge, Craggy Pinnacle, and the memorably named Big Butt. These elevations are not merely labeled features; they are rendered through dense, rhythmic contour lines that reveal the structure of the land with remarkable clarity. Closely spaced contours mark sharp ascents and plunging hollows, while gentler intervals indicate saddles, coves, and ridgeline approaches. The topography speaks to the physical character of the southern Appalachians: ancient, eroded, heavily folded, and deeply dissected by streams. For hikers, geologists, historians, and collectors, the map offers a compelling visual study of terrain that has long drawn visitors for its beauty, remoteness, and commanding views.

The nearby town of Black Mountain provides an important counterpoint to Montreat’s retreat-like setting. Situated at a lower elevation and more directly connected to regional transportation routes, Black Mountain served as a commercial and civic anchor for the area. Its presence on the map shows how mountain communities were linked by roads threading through valleys and climbing toward higher settlements. By 1943, the region was balancing tradition and change: rural land use, religious tourism, educational gatherings, and increasing automobile access all shaped the landscape. The map preserves that transitional moment, before later decades brought expanded development, changing forest management practices, and growing recreational interest in the Blue Ridge and its surrounding communities.

As a USGS topographical map, “Montreat” reflects the agency’s disciplined commitment to accurate land measurement and public geographic knowledge. The United States Geological Survey became renowned for maps that combined scientific precision with practical utility, serving engineers, planners, land managers, military users, and outdoor travelers alike. Here, its cartographic language is elegant in its restraint: contour lines articulate elevation, blue hydrographic details trace creeks and drainage patterns, and settlement symbols distinguish human presence without overwhelming the terrain. The result is a map that is both functional and evocative, transforming the mountains around Montreat into a readable landscape of ridges, watersheds, paths, and communities. It remains a fascinating record of place, faith, geography, and Appalachian history.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
