The USGS quadrangle titled “Guerneville” presents one of Sonoma County’s most evocative river landscapes at the disciplined scale of 1:24,000. Surveyed and dated 1955, with a 1965 imprint, it captures the Russian River country at a moment when rural settlement, resort life, timbered slopes, and emerging conservation values all met in the same narrow valleys. Guerneville appears as the principal riverside community, set within a landscape shaped by water, forest, and steep relief. The map’s mid-century topographic language—contour lines, road classifications, woodland tinting, hydrographic detail, and carefully standardized symbols—turns the region into a richly legible portrait of place, where every bend of the river and rise of the surrounding hills contributes to the story.

Created by the United States Geological Survey, this map reflects the institution’s long-standing reputation for precision, consistency, and scientific authority. USGS topographic mapping was never merely decorative: it was built for engineers, geologists, land managers, hikers, foresters, and planners who needed a dependable understanding of the American landscape. In this Guerneville sheet, that purpose is evident in the clarity with which elevation, drainage, settlement, roads, and vegetation are organized. The cartography has the quiet elegance of utility refined into art. Its vivid greens and whites, characteristic of USGS maps from this era, distinguish forested terrain from more open ground, giving the sheet both practical readability and a striking visual rhythm suited to the redwood country it depicts.

The topographic character of the Guerneville area is the true drama of the map. The Russian River curves through the sheet as the defining natural feature, gathering valleys, roads, and communities along its course. Around it, contour lines tighten and loosen to describe the rugged hills that rise above the river corridor, revealing a terrain of ridges, ravines, and sheltered basins. The nearby redwood forests, including the celebrated Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve and the broader wildlands associated with Austin Creek, suggest why this part of Sonoma County became prized for recreation and preservation. Creeks such as Willow Creek and the many unnamed tributaries add texture to the landscape, showing how water has carved and organized the region over time.

The human geography is equally compelling. Guerneville anchors the river valley, while Forestville, Graton, Monte Rio, Occidental, Jenner, and other neighboring places situate the map within a wider network of Sonoma County communities. River Road, Lower River Road, and Highway 116 trace the practical routes by which residents, travelers, and vacationers moved through this winding country. These roads follow the logic of the land, hugging watercourses and threading through the valleys where passage was easiest. Their presence evokes the mid-century Russian River as both a working landscape and a leisure destination, known for summer cabins, riverside resorts, forest drives, and access to the Pacific-bound reaches near Jenner.

As a historical document, “Guerneville” preserves the region before many later changes in land use, development, environmental policy, and recreational infrastructure altered the balance between settlement and wilderness. It records a landscape still deeply tied to its natural setting: redwood groves, river bends, wooded slopes, small towns, and rural roads arranged in intimate relation to one another. For collectors, the appeal lies not only in the places named, but in the way the map fixes a mid-twentieth-century vision of Sonoma County’s Russian River country. It is a study in terrain, a record of community, and a cartographic tribute to one of Northern California’s most atmospheric river valleys.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
