Published with a 1954 imprint from 1938 survey work, “Abingdon, Virginia” is a finely detailed US Geological Survey topographical portrait of Washington County at the intimate 1:24,000 scale. Centered on the historic town of Abingdon, the map captures a landscape poised between Appalachian rurality and mid-century modernization. Roads, rail lines, streams, ridges, valleys, and settlements are rendered with the sober precision for which USGS quadrangles became indispensable. Here, the town is not isolated but placed within its geographic logic: a community shaped by the Great Valley of Virginia, the Holston River system, and the long corridors of travel that threaded through the mountains. The result is both a practical geographic record and an evocative snapshot of southwestern Virginia before later waves of development reshaped the region.

The United States Geological Survey brought to maps like this a distinctive combination of scientific discipline and civic purpose. Founded in 1879, the USGS became the nation’s principal authority for mapping terrain, water, mineral resources, and the physical fabric of American landscapes. Its topographical sheets were essential tools for engineers, planners, land managers, foresters, hikers, and military authorities alike. In this Abingdon quadrangle, that institutional expertise appears in the meticulous contouring of hills and hollows, the careful notation of transportation routes, and the clear hierarchy of natural and built features. Every line serves a purpose: to make elevation legible, to clarify drainage, and to present the land as a coherent, measurable system. It is cartography in the service of both knowledge and movement.

Abingdon itself occupies a storied position in southwest Virginia, long associated with migration routes, regional commerce, and the cultural life of the Appalachian highlands. The map shows the town amid roads such as US Route 11 and State Route 75, along with rail corridors that reveal how geography directed settlement and exchange. These routes follow valleys and passes rather than imposing themselves upon the mountains, a reminder that infrastructure in this region was negotiated with the land. Nearby built features, mine sites, and institutional grounds, including the later-known Virginia Highlands Community College area, speak to evolving patterns of work, education, and public life. The map preserves a moment when Abingdon’s townscape remained closely interwoven with farms, creek bottoms, wooded slopes, and the practical arteries of regional travel.

The natural drama of the sheet lies in its Appalachian topography. Contour lines gather and loosen across ridges, basins, and valley floors, giving the map a sculptural quality that rewards close reading. Wolfe Valley and other lowlands appear as navigable spaces between rising ground, while peaks and ridgelines articulate the folded terrain characteristic of this corner of Virginia. The Holston River, the North Fork Holston River, and Little Moccasin Creek anchor the hydrological structure of the area, tracing the channels through which settlement, agriculture, and transportation often took shape. Shaded relief and precise elevation markings lend the landscape an almost three-dimensional presence, transforming the sheet from a simple location map into a study of slope, watershed, exposure, and Appalachian form.

As a historical document, the Abingdon quadrangle offers a valuable view of land use before substantial postwar growth, highway expansion, suburbanization, and environmental change altered the region. It allows modern viewers to compare past and present: the extent of roads and railroads, the distribution of farms and settlements, the continuity of stream courses, and the changing relationship between town and countryside. Such maps are especially compelling because they record ordinary landscapes with extraordinary care. They show not only celebrated landmarks, but also the creeks, crossroads, ridges, mines, hollows, and minor communities that shaped daily life. For collectors of Virginia history, Appalachian geography, or American scientific cartography, this map is a richly textured record of place—measured with rigor, yet alive with the character of the land.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
