Titled “Woodruff,” this U.S. Geological Survey topographic map captures the lake-rich heart of northern Wisconsin with survey detail dated 1982 and publication following in 1983. At a scale of 1:24,000, it presents Arbor Vitae, Woodruff, and the surrounding country with the precision characteristic of late twentieth-century USGS quadrangles. The map belongs to an era when federal topographic mapping had matured into a remarkably clear visual language: blue waters, green woodland, fine contour lines, gridded coordinates, and carefully classified roads combine to make the landscape legible at a glance. More than a navigational document, it is a measured portrait of a Northwoods community at a particular moment, recording settlement, recreation, forests, lakes, wetlands, and transport routes in disciplined cartographic form.

The U.S. Geological Survey, founded in 1879, became one of the defining institutions in American scientific mapping, tasked with documenting the nation’s terrain, water, mineral resources, and changing environments. By the time this map was made, the USGS 7.5-minute quadrangle had become the standard reference for engineers, planners, hikers, conservationists, and local governments. Its authority lies in the patient accumulation of field survey, aerial photography, photogrammetry, and geodetic control, translated into a dense but elegant graphic system. On “Woodruff,” that institutional rigor is evident in every contour, shoreline, road classification, and grid tick. The result is a map that balances utility with understated beauty, presenting the Wisconsin landscape not as scenery alone, but as a scientifically observed terrain.

The area shown is a classic Northwoods mosaic of water, forest, and small settlements. Woodruff and Arbor Vitae anchor the map, while nearby Minocqua, Lake Tomahawk, and a constellation of smaller lakes suggest the region’s long association with cabins, resorts, fishing, boating, and seasonal travel. Bearskin Lake, Aqualand Lake, Willow Lake, Hixon Lake, Mud Lake, and Rest Lake appear as part of an intricate hydrological pattern, their shorelines precisely drawn and their relation to roads and wooded areas carefully marked. The Wisconsin River, one of the state’s major waterways, adds broader geographic significance, linking this local scene to a much larger watershed. The map quietly conveys why this part of Wisconsin became prized for recreation and conservation alike.

Topographically, the map reveals a subtly varied glacial landscape shaped by ice, water, and time. Contour lines trace low rises, basins, and depressions, giving form to terrain that might otherwise seem uniform beneath the forest canopy. Lakes, marshes, and drainageways occupy hollows left by glacial action, while roads and settlements curve around natural constraints. The color scheme is especially effective: blue emphasizes the abundance of water, green marks wooded land, and the gridded framework gives the viewer a sense of measured order. Highways, including Highway 47 and local roads, connect residential pockets, lakefront developments, and recreational routes. Trails and forested tracts indicate a landscape where human use is intertwined with outdoor access and environmental stewardship.

The inclusion of the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest places the map within one of Wisconsin’s most important conservation landscapes. Established to protect and restore northern forest ecosystems, the state forest has long supported camping, hiking, wildlife habitat, timber management, and watershed protection. In this 1982 view, one can read the balance between development and preservation: towns and lakefront neighborhoods are present, but so too are extensive woods, wetlands, and public lands. As a historical record, the map invites comparison with the present, revealing where roads have expanded, shorelines have changed, and conservation priorities have evolved. “Woodruff” is therefore both a finely executed topographic survey and a quietly evocative document of the Northwoods at the close of the twentieth century.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
