Published in 2002 using 1998 survey data, the “Naperville Quadrangle” presents a richly detailed USGS portrait of one of metropolitan Chicago’s most dynamic suburban landscapes at the turn of the twenty-first century. Centered on Naperville, Illinois, the map extends across a closely settled and rapidly evolving portion of DuPage County and its environs, where residential subdivisions, civic institutions, transport corridors, and preserved green spaces interlace with the region’s modest but expressive terrain. At the 1:24,000 scale, the quadrangle captures the familiar intimacy of a USGS topographic sheet: streets, railways, schools, parks, lakes, ponds, and industrial districts are all set within the measured language of contours, hydrography, and carefully ordered place names.

The United States Geological Survey brought to this map more than a century of federal cartographic discipline. Founded in 1879, the USGS became the standard-bearer for scientific mapping in the United States, creating topographic quadrangles that served engineers, planners, conservationists, soldiers, hikers, and local historians alike. Its maps are admired not for ornament but for precision, clarity, and completeness: a democratic cartography in which every road, creek, contour, and boundary contributes to a larger understanding of place. In the “Naperville Quadrangle,” that institutional rigor is evident in the clean typographic hierarchy, the standardized symbols, and the balanced use of color that makes a complex suburban environment legible without sacrificing geographic nuance.

Cartographically, the map is a fine example of late twentieth-century USGS topographic design. Contour lines trace the gentle rises and shallow valleys of northeastern Illinois, revealing a landscape shaped less by dramatic relief than by glacial inheritance, drainage patterns, and human development. Blue water features identify the DuPage River system, local ponds, and small lakes, while green areas mark parks, forest preserves, and recreational lands that punctuate the suburban fabric. Built-up areas, roads, railways, and public facilities are rendered with the restrained precision characteristic of the series. The result is both technical and quietly elegant: a map that transforms the ordinary complexity of neighborhoods, highways, streams, and open space into an ordered geographic composition.

Naperville itself dominates the sheet, but the surrounding names and features broaden the story. Lisle, West Chicago, and Aurora appear as neighboring anchors in a region knitted together by commuting routes, rail lines, and arterial roads. Interstate 88, a key east-west corridor of the Chicago metropolitan area, underscores the area’s connection to regional commerce and suburban expansion. The DuPage River and East Branch DuPage River provide a natural counterpoint to the grid of streets and subdivisions, while forest preserves and parks mark deliberate efforts to retain green space amid development. Schools, public buildings, industrial zones, and residential neighborhoods reveal a community infrastructure already dense, prosperous, and thoroughly integrated into greater Chicago.

As a historical document, the “Naperville Quadrangle” is especially compelling because it records a landscape in transition. By 1998, Naperville had already emerged as one of the emblematic suburbs of the Chicago region, shaped by postwar growth, corporate corridors, expanding housing, and improved transportation links. Yet the map also preserves traces of an older geography: river courses, lowlands, rail alignments, and open tracts that predate the newest waves of development. Since its publication, the area has continued to change, making this quadrangle a valuable snapshot of land use, infrastructure, and environmental setting at a precise moment in suburban history. It is a measured, information-rich view of modern Naperville before the next chapter of growth further altered the map.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
