Continuer la lecturePublished in 1963 using survey data from 1953, the US Geological Survey’s “Tesuque” presents a finely resolved portrait of northern New Mexico at mid-century. At the precise 1:24,000 scale, the map centers on the historic village of Tesuque and the surrounding terrain north of Santa Fe, where settlement, reservation lands, arroyos, roads, and rising uplands meet in a compact but richly varied landscape. Its original title, simple and place-rooted, reflects the USGS quadrangle tradition: a rigorous focus on locality, rendered with national scientific standards. The result is both a practical survey document and a historical snapshot, capturing the spatial relationships of Tesuque, nearby Santa Fe, and the Santa Fe Indian Reservation before later decades of regional growth.
The US Geological Survey, founded in 1879, became the preeminent American authority for mapping the nation’s terrain, water systems, mineral resources, and changing landforms. This map belongs to the agency’s celebrated topographic series, designed for engineers, planners, scientists, land managers, and travelers who required dependable geographic intelligence. Its cartography is disciplined and elegant: brown contour lines describe the rise and fall of the land; blue marks waterways and drainage; black records roads, buildings, and other human features; and green highlights wooded or vegetated areas. In the Tesuque quadrangle, these conventions produce a vivid reading of the high-desert environment, transforming elevation, access, and land cover into a coherent visual language.
The terrain shown here is characteristic of the country north of Santa Fe, where the edge of the Rio Grande valley province gives way to foothills, incised drainages, and the first gestures of the Sangre de Cristo uplands. Contour lines crowd together on steeper slopes and relax across gentler ground, allowing the viewer to sense valleys, ridges, washes, and hills without needing a single written description. The map’s topographic character is especially compelling because it records a landscape shaped by both aridity and altitude: seasonal watercourses, dry channels, and subtle relief patterns govern movement and settlement. Roads and trails thread through this broken ground, revealing how geography directed local circulation around Tesuque and toward Santa Fe.
Tesuque itself is one of the most historically resonant places in the Santa Fe region, long associated with Pueblo presence, Spanish colonial influence, and later American territorial development. The nearby Santa Fe Indian Reservation is a central feature of the map’s cultural geography, reminding the viewer that this landscape is not merely scenic terrain but ancestral and inhabited land. The quadrangle records the juxtaposition of Indigenous lands, rural settlement, and the expanding influence of Santa Fe, one of the oldest continuously inhabited urban centers in the United States. In this sense, the map is valuable not only for its contours and roads, but for the historical relationships it preserves between community, jurisdiction, and place.
As a mid-twentieth-century document, “Tesuque” offers a revealing baseline for studying change in northern New Mexico. Comparing it with present-day mapping can illuminate patterns of suburban expansion from Santa Fe, shifts in road networks, altered land use, and evolving approaches to conservation and reservation boundaries. Yet the map’s appeal also lies in its immediate visual beauty: the restrained precision of USGS draftsmanship, the rhythmic sweep of contour lines, and the contrast between green vegetated areas and the spare high-desert topography. It captures a moment when scientific cartography and landscape observation were fused with exceptional clarity, preserving Tesuque and its surrounding hills, valleys, and communities in a form both authoritative and evocative.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
