Continuer la lecturePublished in 1983 from 1982 mapping, the US Geological Survey’s “Lake Tomahawk” presents a precise and evocative portrait of northern Wisconsin’s lake country at a scale of 1:24,000. Centered on the community of Lake Tomahawk, the map captures a landscape shaped by glacial waters, forested ridges, and the quiet infrastructure of a resort region. Tomahawk Lake dominates the composition, joined by Bear Lake, Mud Lake, Little Tomahawk Lake, North Twin Lake, and South Twin Lake, each rendered with the USGS’s characteristic clarity. Color differentiates woodland, water, roads, and terrain, while contour lines reveal the rolling relief beneath the dense Northwoods canopy. It is both a scientific document and a finely ordered visual record of place.
The mapmaker, the United States Geological Survey, brought more than a century of federal cartographic expertise to this quadrangle. Founded in 1879, the USGS became the standard-bearer for systematic mapping in the United States, producing topographic sheets used by engineers, foresters, planners, scientists, hikers, and local governments. Its 1:24,000 quadrangles are particularly admired for their balance of precision and legibility: detailed enough to show minor roads, streams, trails, wetlands, and elevation changes, yet broad enough to describe an entire working landscape. In “Lake Tomahawk,” this disciplined cartographic language gives the wooded terrain a crisp structure, transforming a region of winding shorelines and subtle hills into a readable, elegant geographic composition.
Lake Tomahawk and nearby Minocqua occupy a distinctive place in Wisconsin’s cultural geography. This is a region long associated with summer cabins, fishing camps, boating, and forest recreation, where lakes serve as both landmarks and gathering places. The map records the area at an important moment in the early 1980s, when northern Wisconsin balanced tourism, private land ownership, forestry, and conservation. Roads and access routes show how visitors and residents moved through the landscape, while the clustering of lakes hints at the recreational economy that helped define the region. Yet the map’s restrained topographic style also emphasizes the underlying natural order: water basins, wooded uplands, marshy margins, and the quiet continuity of the forest.
The surrounding Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest gives the map much of its environmental significance. One of Wisconsin’s great public forest landscapes, it preserves a mosaic of pine, hardwood, wetlands, lakes, and wildlife habitat across the Northwoods. On the map, this protected and managed terrain appears not as a scenic abstraction, but as a carefully surveyed environment of trails, roads, waterways, and contour-defined elevations. The many unnamed woodland areas are as important as the named lakes, suggesting a place where forest cover remains the dominant visual and ecological fact. For collectors, this lends the map a special appeal: it records the intersection of recreation and conservation in one of the Midwest’s most beloved lake districts.
Cartographically, “Lake Tomahawk” exemplifies the understated beauty of late twentieth-century USGS topographic design. Blue hydrography traces the lakes and aquatic features; green woodland tint identifies forested land; black and red road symbols distinguish routes by classification; and brown contour lines articulate the area’s gentle but meaningful relief. The result is a map that rewards close looking, revealing shorelines, slopes, access points, and settlement patterns with remarkable economy. Beyond its practical utility, it offers a historical snapshot of land use, transportation, and environmental management in 1982. Subsequent decades may have altered development patterns and conservation priorities, making this sheet a refined record of northern Wisconsin at a particular moment in its modern history.

With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
