Continuer la lectureImprinted in 1987, the US Geological Survey’s “Alton” presents a richly detailed portrait of one of New Hampshire’s most evocative lake-country landscapes. Drawn at the classic 1:24,000 scale, the map captures Alton and Alton Bay at a level of precision prized by hikers, historians, planners, and collectors alike. Its provisional status adds a sense of cartographic immediacy, suggesting a working document of record at a particular moment in the late twentieth century. Roads, watercourses, hills, coves, and settled places are rendered in the disciplined visual language of USGS topography, creating a measured but deeply atmospheric view of a community shaped by upland terrain and the waters of Lake Winnipesaukee.
The map centers on Alton, a historic New Hampshire town at the southern reaches of Lake Winnipesaukee, where village settlement, shoreline recreation, and mountain country converge. Alton Bay appears as a defining feature, a long inlet extending southward from the great lake and anchoring the surrounding roads and neighborhoods. Route 11 and Route 28 trace important corridors through the region, linking the town to the wider Lakes Region and to communities beyond. Smaller place names and local routes, such as Alton Woods Road, lend the map an intimate quality, preserving the pattern of movement and habitation as it stood in 1987. Together, these details offer a fascinating record of rural New England geography in transition.
Lake Winnipesaukee gives the sheet much of its drama, with islands, points, coves, and bays articulating the water’s intricate edge. Bear Island, Mark Island, Governor’s Island, Robinson’s Point, Broad Bay, and Pigeon Cove evoke the complex shoreline geography that has made this area one of New Hampshire’s most celebrated landscapes. Merrymeeting Lake, set apart from Winnipesaukee’s broad expanse, adds another layer of hydrological interest, its surrounding slopes and drainage patterns carefully expressed through contour and blue-line detail. Stony Brook and other small water features reveal how the uplands feed the larger lake system, transforming what might seem a tranquil recreational district into a finely connected watershed.
Mount Major is among the most compelling landmarks shown, rising above the Alton Bay area and long known for its sweeping views across Lake Winnipesaukee and the Belknap Range. On this map, its form is not described in picturesque language but through the elegant precision of contour lines, which reveal slope, ridge, and summit with scientific restraint. This is the enduring appeal of USGS topography: the landscape becomes legible. Hills, roads, streams, shorelines, and settlements are woven into a single visual system, allowing the viewer to understand both natural structure and human use. For anyone drawn to New Hampshire’s lake-and-mountain terrain, the sheet offers uncommon clarity.
Created by the US Geological Survey, the map belongs to one of America’s most respected cartographic traditions. Since the late nineteenth century, the USGS has defined standards for accurate national mapping, supporting land management, scientific research, navigation, engineering, and environmental study. By 1987, its 1:24,000 quadrangles had become essential instruments for reading the American landscape in detail. The “Alton” sheet is valuable not only for what it depicts, but for when it depicts it: a late-twentieth-century snapshot of shoreline development, rural roads, named places, and natural features. It preserves a moment in the evolution of the Lakes Region, balancing technical authority with quiet historical romance.

With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
