Seguir leyendoTitled simply “Detroit,” this 1940 United States Geological Survey map captures the city at a pivotal moment, with a note of May 5, 1941 suggesting a later revision or printing. At 1:24,000 scale, it presents Detroit not as an abstraction but as a densely legible urban landscape: streets, rail corridors, industrial zones, parks, riverfronts, and neighborhood grids all carefully organized within the USGS topographic tradition. The Detroit River forms the great international boundary, with Windsor, Ontario visible across the water, while Belle Isle sits elegantly between the two shores. Published on the eve of America’s full entry into the Second World War, the map preserves the spatial order of a city about to become central to wartime production and modern industrial history.
The United States Geological Survey brought to this map the precision and authority that made its quadrangles indispensable to engineers, planners, geographers, and civic officials. Founded in 1879, the USGS became the nation’s great cartographic archive of terrain, settlement, and infrastructure, translating complex landscapes into standardized, readable form. In Detroit, its method is especially powerful: the agency’s topographic discipline is applied not to wilderness or mountain country, but to one of America’s most dynamic industrial cities. Roads are drawn with clarity, railroads thread through commercial and manufacturing districts, and water features are distinguished with crisp visual contrast. The result is both a practical survey document and a finely structured portrait of metropolitan life.
Detroit’s celebrated radial and gridded street pattern is one of the map’s most compelling features. Woodward Avenue, Gratiot Avenue, Jefferson Avenue, Cass Avenue, Mack Avenue, and the sweeping line of Grand Boulevard organize the city like a civic anatomy, revealing the relationships between downtown, residential quarters, factories, rail yards, and waterfront industry. Highland Park appears embedded within the urban fabric, a reminder of the region’s close association with automobile manufacturing and early twentieth-century industrial expansion. Numerous blocks and neighborhoods are rendered in disciplined detail, allowing the viewer to read the city street by street. This is Detroit before many later expressway interventions and redevelopment schemes altered the older patterns of movement, residence, and commerce.
The natural and engineered waterways give the map much of its character. The Detroit River dominates the eastern edge, not merely as scenery but as a working international corridor connecting the Great Lakes system to commerce, migration, shipbuilding, and industry. Belle Isle Park, reached by the Belle Isle Bridge, appears as an urban refuge within this watery boundary, its parkland contrasting with the dense street grid nearby. To the southwest, the Rouge River and Fort Wayne evoke older layers of military, industrial, and transportation history. Riverside Park and other open spaces punctuate the built environment, showing how public landscapes existed alongside rail lines, docks, factories, and closely packed neighborhoods.
Historically, this map is a remarkable snapshot of Detroit just before the enormous pressures of wartime mobilization, postwar suburbanization, highway construction, and demographic change transformed the city. In 1940, Detroit was already a powerhouse of manufacturing, yet the map still reveals a compact, streetcar-era metropolis shaped by railroads, boulevards, neighborhood commercial corridors, and river access. Its inclusion of Windsor underscores Detroit’s binational geography, a relationship essential to trade, labor, and culture along the border. For collectors, the map offers more than geographic information: it is a visual record of urban form at a decisive threshold, capturing the Motor City’s infrastructure, ambitions, and landscape before the mid-century remaking of American metropolitan life.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
