Seguir leyendoPublished in 1978 from 1962 survey work, the US Geological Survey’s “Bigfork” captures a finely grained portrait of northwestern Montana at the classic 1:24,000 scale. Centered on the village of Bigfork, the map unfolds around the northeastern shore of Flathead Lake, where settlement, water, forest, and mountain terrain converge. Its title is spare, but the landscape it describes is richly layered: a lakeside community poised between the broad, gleaming expanse of Flathead Lake and the rising country that leads toward the Swan Range and Mission Mountains. As a historical document, it preserves Bigfork before later decades of growth as a resort and recreation destination, offering a measured view of roads, shorelines, drainage, and landforms at a moment when the town still retained a distinctly rural character.
The US Geological Survey brought to this map nearly a century of institutional expertise. Founded in 1879, the USGS became the principal scientific mapping agency of the United States, producing topographic quadrangles that served engineers, foresters, planners, hikers, and researchers alike. The “Bigfork” sheet reflects the agency’s disciplined cartographic language: contour lines articulate elevation, blue waterways organize the drainage network, and precise symbols mark roads, buildings, and cultural features. Unlike pictorial or promotional maps, USGS quadrangles were designed for accuracy and utility, yet their restraint gives them a quiet elegance. Every contour and creek line contributes to a larger portrait of place, translating the rugged physical character of the Flathead region into a precise visual system.
Flathead Lake dominates the western portion of the mapped area, anchoring Bigfork within one of Montana’s most celebrated natural settings. The lake, among the largest natural freshwater lakes west of the Mississippi, has long shaped the local economy, ecology, and imagination. Its shorelines offered access for travel, fishing, boating, and later tourism, while its presence moderated the surrounding climate and supported orchards, residences, and recreation. On the map, the lake’s edge is not merely a boundary but a central geographic force: roads bend toward it, settlement gathers near it, and drainage lines descend into it. Bigfork’s position at this meeting of water and upland terrain explains much of its enduring appeal as a scenic gateway community.
East and southeast of Bigfork, the terrain becomes increasingly expressive through the map’s contouring. The Swan River threads through the landscape, linking valley floors with forested slopes and helping define the natural corridors that shaped movement through the region. Nearby Echo Lake appears as a quieter counterpoint to Flathead Lake, set amid rolling ground and wooded country. Farther into the surrounding highlands, the land rises toward the dramatic mountain environments associated with the Mission Mountains and Jewel Basin. These features make the quadrangle especially engaging: the viewer can read the transition from lakeshore settlement to foothill, valley, and alpine approaches, tracing how elevation and water together structure the human and natural geography of the area.
As a historical record, the “Bigfork” map evokes a landscape in transition. By the time of its 1978 imprint, Montana’s Flathead region was increasingly valued for outdoor recreation, scenic residence, and tourism, yet this map preserves an earlier pattern of roads, rural parcels, and modest community development. Bigfork would grow in reputation as a destination for lake recreation, arts, dining, and access to nearby wilderness landscapes, but here it remains embedded in a broader working and natural environment. The unnamed hills, valleys, streams, and shorelines are as important as the town itself, giving the map a sense of spaciousness. It is a refined topographic study of place: scientific in method, evocative in effect, and deeply rooted in Montana’s mountain-lake country.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
