Seguir leyendoPublished in 1993 from mapping dated 1980, the United States Geological Survey’s “Bend, Oregon” presents a richly detailed portrait of central Oregon at a moment when recreation, forestry, conservation, and growing settlement all met beneath the eastern slopes of the Cascades. Drawn at 1:100,000 scale, it centers on Bend and reaches across a dramatic landscape of volcanic highlands, forested plateaus, river corridors, ranchlands, and resort communities. Black Butte Ranch appears within this broader terrain as part of a distinctive region shaped by lava flows, ponderosa pine, snow-fed streams, and mountain views. The map captures not only roads and settlements, but also the natural framework that made the Bend area one of Oregon’s most celebrated outdoor landscapes.
The USGS style gives the map its authority and visual discipline: contour lines articulate the rise and fall of the land, while color-coded relief, hydrography, forest tinting, roads, trails, and symbols create a layered geographic record. Mountains, valleys, streams, campgrounds, airstrips, and public lands are not decorative additions, but part of a precise cartographic language developed for navigation, resource management, and scientific understanding. Around Black Butte Ranch and Sisters, the topography becomes especially expressive, revealing the transition from Cascade foothills into drier interior country. This combination of technical clarity and regional beauty makes the map an evocative guide to late twentieth-century central Oregon, equally attentive to wilderness, settlement, and infrastructure.
Bend anchors the southeastern portion of the sheet, a city long defined by its relationship with the Deschutes River, the timber economy, and access to the surrounding mountains. The river system is one of the map’s great organizing features, with the Deschutes and its tributaries tracing sinuous blue routes through forests, parks, and open country. Farther south, La Pine State Park marks another landscape of riverine recreation and high desert ecology, while Sparks Lake evokes the volcanic lakes and wetlands west of Bend. These water features speak to the region’s hydrological complexity, where snowmelt from the Cascades feeds rivers, lakes, meadows, and wildlife habitat across a varied and often rugged volcanic terrain.
To the north and northwest, the map opens onto some of Oregon’s most iconic geological and recreational landmarks. Sisters appears near the edge of Cascade country, close to Whychus Creek and the approaches toward Mount Washington, where the terrain grows steeper and more alpine in character. The Metolius River, famed for its clear springs and fly-fishing waters, adds another thread to the region’s natural story. Eastward, the Crooked River and Smith Rock State Park bring a different drama: cliffs, canyons, and rock formations that would become internationally known among climbers. Together these places reveal central Oregon as a meeting ground of volcanic peaks, spring-fed rivers, basalt outcrops, and high desert expanses.
As a historical document, “Bend, Oregon” records the region before several decades of accelerated growth, tourism, and environmental change reshaped central Oregon’s communities and landscapes. Roadways, trails, airports, campgrounds, picnic areas, and public land boundaries show how people moved through and used the area in the late twentieth century, from forest management and ranching to hiking, camping, skiing, fishing, and resort life. Black Butte Ranch, Deschutes National Forest, and the network of parks and natural corridors together reflect the increasing importance of outdoor recreation in Oregon’s economy and identity. Produced by the USGS, whose topographic maps remain benchmarks of American cartography, this sheet preserves a precise and compelling image of place, terrain, and time.

With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
