WeiterlesenLager Beer, created by Pfeil & Goltz in 1880, turns a simple beverage advertisement into an elaborate comic tableau. Its unlikely protagonist is a pale green frog dressed in richly ornamented royal robes, perched beside—or partly enthroned upon—a wooden barrel and raising a foaming beer stein. Warm orange, gold and russet tones give the scene a luxurious glow, while the frog’s ceremonious costume lends the familiar drink an air of playful grandeur.
The poster belongs to a period in which colour lithography was transforming commercial imagery. By the 1880s, advertisers could combine emphatic lettering, saturated colour and intricate pictorial invention to make a brand memorable at a glance. Pfeil & Goltz exploit those possibilities with unusual wit: rather than relying on the product alone, the design builds a miniature fantasy around it. The result reflects an increasingly sophisticated visual culture in which advertisements were not merely notices but carefully staged entertainments.
A closer look
The frog commands the foreground, its light green head and hands standing out against the deeper warmth of its clothing. Red fabric is edged and patterned with gold, creating the impression of ceremonial finery in humorous contrast to the creature wearing it. Highlights pick out the raised stein and its frothy head, making the drink one of the brightest points in the composition. Beneath the figure, darker shadow gives the frog and barrel a surprisingly substantial presence.
Above, a golden arch and ribbon-like ornament frame the scene with the visual language of heraldry or theatrical display. Small tasselled details heighten the sense of mock luxury, while the barrel at lower right introduces rougher, earthy browns. These decorative flourishes are balanced by a natural setting of grass, rocks, water and dense green foliage. Trees recede towards the horizon, and rippled reflections lead the eye away from the emphatic foreground into a quieter middle distance.
Along the lower edge, the words “LAGER BEER” appear in large, bold lettering. Their scale anchors the busy illustration and ensures that the commercial message remains unmistakable. The contrast between straightforward typography and whimsical narrative is central to the poster’s effect: first the regal frog catches the eye, then the product name resolves the joke. A thin border contains the various elements, tightening the landscape, ornament and lettering into a coherent vertical design.
Context and significance
Late nineteenth-century beverage advertising frequently drew upon abundance, conviviality and conspicuous display, but Lager Beer approaches those themes through caricature. The barrel evokes brewing and storage, the overflowing stein promises refreshment, and the richly dressed frog presides over both like a comic monarch. No elaborate explanation is required; costume, gesture and product are arranged to communicate pleasure and distinction immediately.
What makes the design especially engaging is its balance of persuasive clarity and visual excess. The message is concise, yet the surrounding details reward lingering attention: gold edging on the robe, varied textures among the foreground rocks and grasses, the play of warm ornament against cool water and foliage. Pfeil & Goltz created an advertisement that remains legible as commercial graphic art while also offering the eccentric charm of a nineteenth-century illustrated fable.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
