At its centre, a figure enveloped in flowing fabric leans towards a second figure in military uniform, their overlapping forms suggesting an exchange at once intimate and conspiratorial. Warm browns, muted pinks and cream tones dominate, with restrained notes of blue and green, while curving borders and decorative motifs bind the composition into a richly worked vertical design.
Created in fin-de-siècle Paris, the maquette belongs to the theatrical poster culture through which Mucha established his distinctive form of Art Nouveau. His reputation had been transformed by his 1894 poster for the actress Sarah Bernhardt, and his subsequent stage designs made advertising inseparable from the spectacle it announced. Rather than treating names and performance details as merely functional information, Mucha integrated figures, lettering and ornament into a unified visual rhythm. The result was publicity capable of holding its own amid the crowded posters and entertainments of the Parisian street.
A closer look
The central pairing provides the design’s emotional focus. Fine contours describe the folds of the draped costume, which sweeps through the composition in long, pliant lines; a small pattern of stars punctuates part of the garment. Against this softness, the military uniform introduces sharper structure. The uniformed figure’s face is modelled with delicate tonal shading, while the close placement of the two heads concentrates attention on their private encounter.
Behind them, an ornate circular form contains faint, map-like geographical features, giving the background the appearance of a globe, chart or emblematic world. It is less a literal setting than a graphic counterweight to the figures: its rounded geometry anchors the upper part of the design while echoing the surrounding curves. Smaller faces peer into the scene from the upper corners, adding another layer of observation and reinforcing the sense that this is a theatrical world of secrets, surveillance and partially disclosed action.
Details at the margins reward slower looking. Intertwining patterns form an elaborate frame along the left, while floral ornament curls around the figures without entirely separating foreground from background. In the lower right, a small table crowded with objects introduces a compact still-life element. Nearby, the handwritten inscription “Souvenir de Services Secret” has a markedly different character from the more formal decorative structure around it, bringing the personal immediacy of a theatrical keepsake into the design.
Context and significance
A maquette records a design at a preparatory stage, and this example makes Mucha’s method especially legible. The principal figures are not simply placed inside an ornamental border: fabric, bodies, circular emblems and lettering are organised as one continuous system. Asymmetry keeps the scene active, yet the repeated arcs and flowing contours prevent it from becoming visually unsettled. This balance between movement and decorative order is central to Mucha’s work of the 1890s.
Services secret also reflects the close relationship between the Parisian stage and modern graphic art during the Belle Époque. Posters had to communicate swiftly, but Mucha gave them the complexity of independent compositions, merging commercial purpose with the glamour of live performance. Here, military severity, soft costume, watchful faces and the enigmatic world motif create a narrative atmosphere without fully explaining it—a fitting visual language for a drama built around secrecy.

The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). Mein Standardrahmen ist ein Galerie-Stil-Rahmen aus schwarzem Eschenholz. Er ist einfach und sieht ziemlich modern aus. Mein Standardrahmen ist etwa 20 mm (0,8 Zoll) breit.
Ich verwende super-klares Acryl (Plexiglas/Acrylt) für das Glas des Rahmens. Es ist leichter und sicherer als Glas – und es sieht besser aus, da die Reflexion geringer ist.
Sechs Standardrahmenfarben sind kostenlos erhältlich (schwarz, dunkelbraun, dunkelgrau, Eiche, weiß und antikgold).
Die meisten Karten, Kunstwerke und Illustrationen sind auch als gerahmte Leinwand erhältlich. Wir verwenden matte (nicht glänzende) Baumwollleinwand, spannen sie über einen nachhaltig beschafften Buchenrahmen und 'schweben' dann das Stück innerhalb eines Holzrahmens. Das Endergebnis ist ziemlich schön, und es gibt keine Verglasung, die im Weg ist.
Alle Rahmen werden "bereit zum Aufhängen" geliefert, entweder mit einer Schnur oder Halterungen auf der Rückseite. Sehr große Rahmen haben schwere Aufhängeplatten und/oder eine Montageschiene. Wenn Sie Fragen haben, können Sie bitte Kontakt aufnehmen.

Unser Londoner Studio arbeitet mit sorgfältig ausgewähltem Ausgangsmaterial aus Museen, Bibliotheken, Archiven und privaten Sammlungen. Wir restaurieren altersbedingte Schäden, verblasste Farben und unvollkommene Reproduktionen, während wir die Komposition, den Pinselstrich, die Linienführung, die Textur und den zeittypischen Charakter des Künstlers bewahren.
Wir verwenden keine generative KI, um das Kunstwerk neu zu zeichnen, neu zu interpretieren oder zu erfinden. Digitale Restaurierung dient ausschließlich dazu, das Originalwerk so originalgetreu wie möglich wiederherzustellen und zu reproduzieren.
Sobald die Restaurierung abgeschlossen ist, wird das Masterkunstwerk für die von Ihnen gewählte Größe und Ausführung vorbereitet. Anschließend wird Ihr Stück gedruckt und, sofern ausgewählt, in der Nähe des Lieferorts gerahmt.
Unsere Giclée-Kunstdrucke verwenden säurefreies 200-g/m²-Archiv-Mattpapier und lichtechte Pigmenttinten für ein reichhaltiges Finish in Museumsqualität. Gerahmte Kunstdrucke verwenden kristallklares optisches Acryl und werden hängefertig geliefert.
