WeiterlesenLeonetto Cappiello’s Pellisson père et Cie Cognac, created in 1910, turns an advertising proposition into a compact piece of visual comedy. Against an almost unbroken black ground, a red-haired child strains beneath an enormous orange barrel, its exaggerated scale supplying the joke and establishing the brand’s presence before a word has been read. Green lettering names “Pellisson Père & Cie” across the cask, while the golden “Cognac Pellisson” below anchors the design with the directness of a theatrical bill.
Born in Italy and active in Paris, Cappiello was one of the artists who transformed European poster design during the early twentieth century. Rather than filling the sheet with descriptive detail, he favoured a single emphatic figure or object, isolated through strong colour contrast and legible at a glance. That approach was especially effective on busy urban streets, where an advertisement had only moments to register. Here, the outsized barrel functions simultaneously as product, brand label and comic prop: a memorable silhouette devised for an age in which commercial identity was becoming increasingly visual.
A closer look
The barrel occupies much of the upper half of the composition, pushing its broad curved form towards the edges. Alternating bands of orange, ochre and darker shading give it just enough volume to appear weighty, yet the treatment remains decisively graphic. Its green inscription cuts crisply across the warm surface, ensuring that the company name forms part of the central spectacle rather than becoming a separate caption.
Below, the child’s small body is almost consumed by the task of supporting the cask. Bright red hair, a yellow outfit and a green bow create sharp accents against the black field. The determined expression and braced posture make the impossible burden amusing rather than alarming: the figure resembles a performer engaged in an extravagant feat of strength. Cappiello’s smooth contours and simplified areas of colour keep the gesture instantly intelligible, even as small touches—the angle of the limbs, the rounded face and the subtle modelling of the barrel—reward closer attention.
The surrounding darkness is an active part of the design. With no scenery, furniture or decorative pattern to dilute the effect, the orange cask and pale, brightly dressed figure seem to spring forward. A restrained beige border contains the black field, while the lettering at the foot provides a firm visual base. The eye moves naturally from the company name on the barrel, through the child’s precarious pose, to the product name below: illustration and typography operate as a single, carefully ordered message.
Context and significance
Posters had become a prominent feature of modern public life by 1910, combining illustration, typography and commercial persuasion on an urban scale. Cappiello’s contribution was to reduce this language to its most memorable elements. His advertisements often avoid literal narratives about manufacture or consumption; instead, they establish a vivid association through humour, physical exaggeration and unexpected characters. The child and barrel in Pellisson père et Cie Cognac exemplify that method, presenting the drink not through an elaborate social setting but through one instantly recognisable visual conceit.
The result retains the economy of a successful advertisement while offering the formal pleasures of accomplished graphic art. Warm orange and gold flare against deep black, green lettering supplies a cool counterpoint, and the improbable difference in scale gives the composition its enduring wit. It is a particularly clear example of how Cappiello made branding inseparable from character, colour and silhouette.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
