WeiterlesenVins et Spiritueux, H. Van Beveren-Giet, Gand (1860–1880), published anonymously in 1860, is an exuberant French-language advertisement for a Ghent wine and spirits merchant. Rather than presenting its wares through sober description, the design constructs an elaborate stage around them. A richly stocked cellar or bar occupies the centre, framed by red drapery, gilded ornament and an emphatic hierarchy of lettering. Deep crimson, glowing orange and warm gold dominate, while a vivid blue ribbon bearing the name ‘H. Van Beveren Giet’ cuts through the warmer palette.
The work belongs to a period in which commercial printing was acquiring an increasingly sophisticated visual language. Merchants used decorative labels and advertisements not simply to identify goods, but to establish character: abundance, refinement and reliability could all be communicated through heraldry, classical figures and lavish typography. ‘Gand’ is the French name for Ghent, and its prominent appearance here identifies a Belgian business addressing a francophone public. The result is both an advertisement and a compact record of nineteenth-century consumer culture, when branding and ornament were becoming closely entwined.
A closer look
The composition rises through a series of clearly defined layers. At the bottom, ‘GAND’ appears in forceful capitals on a red banner, providing a firm geographical anchor. Immediately above, the merchant’s name sweeps across the design in flowing script, its blue ground making it one of the most conspicuous passages in the poster. Higher still, the words ‘VINS & SPIRITUEUX’ are set in a large decorative serif face, surrounded by embellishment rather than isolated as a plain commercial heading. Changes in typeface, scale and colour guide the eye while preventing the densely packed design from becoming visually static.
Behind this typography is a miniature world of trade. Shelves and bottles fill the central interior, where small figures introduce a sense of activity. The space is partly revealed and partly enclosed by ruffled red curtains, giving the merchant’s premises something of a theatrical proscenium. Darker recesses within the cellar contrast with the brighter framing elements, creating depth and making the stocked interior appear invitingly illuminated.
The surrounding ornament repays closer attention. Grapevines wind through the border, linking the decoration directly to the advertised goods, while repeating floral motifs create a dense linear texture. Figures flank the central scene, and seated figures with flags occupy the upper corners. Above them, a heraldic crest forms a ceremonial crown to the composition. Crisp contours distinguish banners, drapery and architectural detail, while the gradual movement from deep red to lighter gold keeps the elaborate framework legible.
Context and significance
Mid-nineteenth-century commercial design frequently borrowed the established vocabulary of prestige imagery. Crests suggested authority; classical or allegorical figures lent grandeur; curtains turned an ordinary display into a spectacle. Here these devices are assembled around the everyday business of selling wine and spirits. The poster’s persuasive force lies less in any single claim than in accumulation: stocked shelves, ornamental abundance, heraldic display and carefully differentiated lettering together create an impression of a substantial, polished enterprise.
What makes the design especially engaging today is this fusion of commerce and pageantry. Every element has an advertising purpose, yet the profusion of grapevines, ribbons, figures and typographic flourishes gives it an intricacy that extends well beyond practical information. It offers a vivid glimpse of how a Ghent merchant addressed prospective customers in 1860—through colour, spectacle and the cultivated theatre of abundance.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
