Champagne Vicomte F. de Castellane. Epernay, issued by Imp. Arnoux in 1900, makes the bottle itself the undisputed centre of attention. Its dark green silhouette rises through a brilliant yellow field, framed by emphatic blue lettering and enlivened by touches of white and red on the label. The composition is direct enough to register at a glance, yet decorative details—a crown above the neck, an intricate circular emblem and carefully varied typography—give the advertisement an air of ceremony appropriate to its subject.

The poster belongs to the flourishing commercial culture of the Belle Époque, when lithographic advertising gave French streets, cafés and railway stations a new visual intensity. Producers of luxury goods understood that a memorable public identity could be created through colour, lettering and a single commanding motif. Champagne was especially suited to this language: associated with celebration and prestige, it required little narrative explanation. Here, Imp. Arnoux reduces the message to essentials—name, place and bottle—while turning those elements into a poised graphic arrangement.

A closer look

Across the upper section, the word ‘CHAMPAGNE’ appears in large blue capitals, its cool tone standing sharply against the saturated yellow ground. The lettering establishes the product category before the eye reaches the bottle, while its broad forms echo the visual weight of the typography below. At the lower edge, ‘VICOMTE F. DE CASTELLANE’ is similarly prominent, with ‘Epernay’ incorporated beneath: brand and place become part of the poster’s decorative architecture rather than supplementary information.

The bottle occupies the vertical axis, its rounded shoulders and long neck crisply outlined against the flat background. Subtle texture within the glass introduces a restrained suggestion of volume, but the overall treatment remains emphatically graphic. On the pale label, a bold red cross-band cuts across the darker body of the bottle. This small but forceful accent is especially effective because the surrounding palette is so tightly controlled; red appears as a concentrated interruption within the larger harmony of yellow, green and blue.

Several finer details reward a slower reading. A crown motif hovers above the bottle’s neck, lending the branding a heraldic character, while the circular device on the label compresses ornament and identity into a miniature emblem. Around these concentrated areas of detail, the broad yellow expanse functions as active negative space. Rather than filling the sheet with subsidiary decoration, the designer allows the uncluttered field to isolate the bottle and increase the force of its silhouette.

Context and significance

Épernay, named prominently in the design, lies at the heart of France’s Champagne-producing region and became closely identified with the commercial presentation of the wine. In a poster such as this, the place name therefore carries more than geographical information: it anchors the product in a recognised culture of production and connoisseurship. The inclusion of ‘Cuvée 1900’ near the bottle’s base also ties the advertisement closely to the turn of the century, a moment when printed publicity was becoming increasingly sophisticated in its management of brand identity.

What distinguishes this design is its economy. There is no banquet, fashionable drinker or elaborate social scene; celebration is conveyed instead through luminous colour, heraldic detail and commanding scale. The result sits neatly between commercial notice and decorative graphic art, demonstrating how Belle Époque advertising could make even a straightforward product display visually distinctive.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the undefined version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
