August Macke’s Three Girls in a Barque, painted in 1912, turns a boating scene into a buoyant arrangement of colour and curving form. Three young women occupy the centre of the composition: one leans against the side of the vessel while the others sit close together, their rounded silhouettes gathered into a compact, rhythmic group. The boat’s vivid red edge cuts through surrounding blues and greens, giving this apparently leisurely scene a lively visual momentum.

Macke was a leading figure in German Expressionism and an important member of the circle associated with Der Blaue Reiter. Yet his art often has a character distinct from the movement’s more overtly spiritual or visionary tendencies. He repeatedly found his subjects in everyday leisure—gardens, promenades, shop windows and figures beside water—using simplified forms and heightened colour to make familiar experience newly vivid. Created only two years before his death in 1914, Three Girls in a Barque belongs to the concentrated, experimental final phase of a remarkably brief career.

A closer look

The composition unfolds horizontally, but it is far from static. The central figures and their vessel are surrounded by sweeping contours, ripples and patches of stylised foliage. At the lower edge, bands of vibrant blue and green suggest moving water without describing every reflection; small, abstracted fish-like shapes appear to be absorbed into the current. The natural setting is similarly compressed into energetic signs—leaf forms, curling stems and dense areas of green that encircle the boat rather than receding into a conventionally measured landscape.

Warm and cool colours continually play against one another. Sunny yellow and soft pink illuminate the women’s bodies, while blue, green and dark brown establish the water and vegetation around them. Red provides the sharpest accents, most notably along the boat and in the clothing of the standing male figure at the lower right. Holding a long spear, he introduces a taut vertical and diagonal counterpoint to the seated group. His active stance also creates a subtle contrast with the women’s relaxed poses.

Across the upper left, a clear blue sky and loosely formed clouds open the scene, balancing the denser patterns below. Macke’s visible brushwork prevents the simplified shapes from becoming merely graphic: edges soften, adjoining colours seem to meet and mingle, and the curves of bodies, foliage and waves echo one another. Spatial depth remains legible—the figures occupy the foreground, the boat establishes a middle zone and vegetation encloses the background—but clarity is repeatedly interrupted by colour and pattern.

Context and significance

In the years around 1912, artists across Europe were questioning naturalistic description and experimenting with colour as an independent structural force. Macke’s response was especially attuned to harmony, rhythm and the sensuous appearance of modern life. Here, recognisable figures and landscape remain intact, yet neither anatomy nor space is treated conventionally. Forms are abbreviated and reorganised so that a shoulder, the rim of the boat or a curling wave can participate in the same decorative movement.

Three Girls in a Barque is therefore more than a record of a waterside episode. Its particular appeal lies in the balance between ease and energy: the occupants appear settled, but everything around them seems to circulate. The crisp colour, asymmetrical placement and repeated curves give the scene the immediacy of a passing summer moment while revealing Macke’s distinctive ability to bring clarity and abstraction into unusually harmonious alignment.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
