The Czech thinker Jan Amos Komenský—better known by the Latinised name Comenius—provides the historical focus, while the surrounding figures and distant horizon transform his story into a collective scene of hardship and endurance. Against the cool, overcast setting, the small glow of a lantern in the foreground becomes a particularly arresting note of warmth.
The work belongs to Mucha’s ambitious Slav Epic, a monumental cycle devoted to the history and cultural identity of the Slavic peoples. It represents a striking departure from the elegant theatrical and advertising designs for which he remains best known. Here the decorative language associated with Mucha’s Art Nouveau career gives way to large-scale historical painting, combining egg tempera and oil on canvas. Comenius was an especially resonant subject: a Czech philosopher, theologian and educational thinker whose long experience of religious conflict and exile made him an enduring figure of intellectual perseverance.
A closer look
The composition is constructed in layers. Darkly clothed figures occupy the foreground, their forms clearly articulated against the paler water, sky and distant land. Near the centre, a figure opens his arms in an expansive gesture, introducing movement into an otherwise hushed gathering. At the lower left, several people huddle close together, their subdued postures suggesting shared contemplation rather than public ceremony. The folds of coats and scarves are carefully delineated, lending weight and texture to the human forms.
Beyond them, the landscape recedes through soft tonal gradations. Blue-grey sky lightens towards the horizon, while hills and buildings dissolve into haze. On the far right, faint silhouettes of architecture and a windmill are absorbed almost completely into the atmosphere. A solitary seated figure positioned towards the middle distance looks outward, reinforcing the composition’s movement from the clustered foreground towards the remote, indistinct world beyond.
Small details prevent the expansive scene from becoming static. Tall grasses rise through the foreground with a suggestion of wind, their fine strokes contrasting with the smoother transitions of sky and water. Most notable is the lantern near the lower right: its amber light produces gentle highlights within an overwhelmingly cool palette. Its modest scale is crucial. Rather than dominating the scene, it remains a concentrated point of illumination—the literal “flicker” named in the subtitle.
Context and significance
Mucha’s international reputation had been established through highly stylised posters, illustrations and decorative designs, often organised around sinuous contours, ornamental pattern and idealised figures. The Slav Epic pursued a markedly different purpose. Its subjects were drawn from Slavic history, religion and culture, allowing Mucha to work with crowds, landscape and historical narrative on a monumental scale. Yet traces of his graphic intelligence remain visible in the clear silhouettes, controlled tonal masses and careful direction of the eye across the composition.
Completed in 1918, this scene also belongs to a moment when questions of Czech and wider Slavic identity carried particular urgency. Mucha avoids the rhetoric of military triumph, instead presenting history through vulnerability, reflection and persistence. The restrained palette, extensive mist and isolated warmth of the lantern give Comenius’s story an unusual emotional register: hope appears not as spectacle, but as something fragile enough to be guarded.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
