The design belongs to Mucha’s celebrated series The Seasons, in which four graceful female figures embody the changing year through setting, gesture and botanical ornament. Produced during the height of the Czech artist’s Paris career, the series reflects the decorative language that made his work so closely associated with Art Nouveau and the visual culture of the Belle Époque. Mucha brought together the immediacy of poster design, the rhythmic line of illustration and the richness of the decorative arts, creating compositions in which figure, lettering and natural motif form a unified whole.
A closer look
The woman occupies the central foreground in a relaxed, asymmetrical pose, leaning towards the water as though sheltered beneath the surrounding vegetation. Her pale garment falls in long, fluid folds, its lightly defined edges standing out against the deeper greens behind her. Red blossoms threaded through her hair provide the strongest accents in the composition, echoing the warmer notes of the landscape while drawing attention to her inclined head and composed expression.
Much of the design’s movement comes from its plant forms. Leaves and vines gather thickly at the lower left, then wind around the figure and continue into the background as slender branches. Their curving contours answer the folds of the clothing and the lines of the body, softening the boundary between person and setting. Mucha’s vegetation is carefully observed yet unmistakably decorative: foliage becomes a system of arcs, loops and repeated shapes rather than merely a description of wild growth.
Behind this intricate foreground, the space opens into water and sky. Rocks at the lower edge anchor the figure beside the pool, while faint reflections carry blue and pink tones across the surface. Above, soft clouds pass through a pale blue sky warmed with blush-coloured light. This contrast between closely woven foliage and the quieter background creates a shallow but enveloping depth. At the bottom right, the word ‘ÉTÉ’ is integrated into the composition in stylised lettering, balanced by Mucha’s fine-script signature at the opposite side.
Context and significance
Mucha’s women are often remembered for their flowing hair, floral settings and idealised beauty, but their effectiveness depends equally upon disciplined graphic structure. Here, the figure is not placed before ornament as though against a separate backdrop; she is built into it. Lines pass from garment to vine, warm accents recur between flowers, skin and cloud, and each area contributes to the tall vertical rhythm of the design. The restrained typography likewise forms part of the decorative scheme rather than interrupting it.
Summer also demonstrates how fin-de-siècle graphic art could move between illustration and interior decoration. The seasonal personification offered Mucha a classical theme, yet his treatment is distinctly modern in its flattened space, simplified colour and emphasis on contour. The result is both an evocative study of the season and a concise statement of his mature visual vocabulary: sensuous without excess, richly ornamented yet carefully ordered.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
