Long red hair falls in rhythmic waves around her floral crown, while softly draped garments echo the organic contours of the surrounding plants. Warm brown, russet and orange are tempered by muted greens, rose and beige, giving the composition the mellow richness of a season poised between abundance and decline.
The design belongs to Mucha’s seasonal series, in which the Czech artist translated the traditional allegory of the Four Seasons into the new decorative language of fin-de-siècle Paris. By the mid-1890s, Mucha’s sinuous outlines, idealised women and densely orchestrated natural motifs had become closely associated with Art Nouveau. His work occupied a fertile territory between poster art, illustration and interior decoration, reflecting a Belle Époque visual culture in which imagery made for public circulation could also be treated as sophisticated design.
A closer look
The figure reclines rather than standing ceremonially, lending Autumn an air of ease and sensual repose. Her body forms a long, gentle diagonal across the vertical composition, balanced by the upward movement of branches and flowers at the right. Fine contour lines define her serene face and the folds of her robe, while the shadow beneath her creates just enough depth to distinguish her from the ornamental framework behind. The result remains deliberately shallow and decorative: figure, foliage and border appear to share the same carefully arranged surface.
At the lower left, clusters of purple grapes provide one of the darkest and most concentrated passages of colour. Highlights and small pockets of shadow give the fruit a ripe, almost tactile fullness, contrasting with the flatter treatment of the leaves and background. Vine tendrils work their way into the design, visually binding the woman to the harvest around her. Above and to the right, slender branches and stylised flowers open out against paler tones, relieving the density below and guiding the eye back towards the figure’s head and crown.
Mucha’s palette is particularly subtle here. Burnished oranges and warm browns carry the autumnal theme, but the surrounding soft pinks, greens and golds prevent the scene from becoming heavy. The word “AUTOMNE” appears at the bottom in restrained serif lettering, integrated into the decorative scheme rather than competing with it. Even this modest inscription participates in the overall balance of line, ornament and open space.
Context and significance
Allegorical figures representing the seasons had a long history in European art, but Mucha recast the convention for the modern graphic age. Autumn is not burdened with elaborate narrative attributes; grapes, leaves, colour and bodily pose are enough to identify her. Nature becomes both subject and organising principle, with hair, fabric, stems and decorative borders joined by the same flowing linear rhythm. This unity of figure and ornament is central to Mucha’s distinctive contribution to Art Nouveau.
The work also demonstrates how late nineteenth-century poster and decorative design could dissolve the boundary between fine and applied art. Mucha’s lithographic compositions were designed for circulation, yet their intricate line, stylised flora and carefully controlled typography rewarded close attention. In Les Saisons – automne, the conventional emblem of the harvest becomes an enveloping ornamental world: poised, richly coloured and unmistakably of the Belle Époque.

We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
