Made by Wagner & Co. Wilson in 1887, The modern crusader recasts the solemn language of heroic allegory as exuberant Gilded Age comedy. A stout, ruddy-cheeked man in crusader-like costume sits astride a thick-coated white goat, raising a glass with evident satisfaction. His brilliant red shirt, glossy black hat and expansive expression command the composition, while the animal’s curved horns lend the unlikely mount a suitably heraldic silhouette. The result is at once mock-heroic and promotional: an everyday beverage is presented with the fanfare of a grand campaign.

This late nineteenth-century American chromolithograph belongs to a visual culture in which commercial illustration, topical humour and caricature readily overlapped. Historical and religious archetypes offered artists an instantly recognisable vocabulary for addressing contemporary society; here, the crusader has been transformed from an austere medieval warrior into a convivial modern champion. Bold colour and exaggerated characterisation ensured that such imagery could communicate quickly, while its humour made the message memorable. Rather than relying on extensive copy, the design builds its appeal around a single theatrical personality and a knowingly absurd conceit.

A closer look

The composition is vertically arranged and tightly concentrated on the central pair. The rider’s rounded body rises in a strong column of scarlet, sharply set against a softly graduated ground of beige, grey and near-white. His dark hat anchors the upper part of the design, while the uplifted glass creates a small but crucial accent: held away from the body, it reads almost like a trophy or ceremonial object. A bright reflection across its surface gives the drink a tangible presence amid the broader, flatter passages of colour.

Much of the comedy lies in the contrast between rider and mount. The man appears jovial and self-assured, with plump cheeks and deliberately overstated facial features; beneath him, the goat is compact, sturdy and richly textured. Its prominent horns curve outwards around the lower figure, while longer hairs gather around the face and shorter marks articulate the body. The carefully distinguished hooves add an unexpectedly observant note to an otherwise improbable scene. Soft shading gives both figures volume, yet the uncluttered background preserves the direct, emblematic quality of a poster.

Colour is used with similar economy. The hot red of the shirt advances immediately, surrounded by the cooler black of the hat, warm brown shadows and the creamy white of the goat’s coat. The pale setting contains no distracting scenery, allowing silhouette, gesture and expression to carry the argument. At the lower right, the inscription “THE MODERN CRUSADER.” functions almost as a punchline: formal, declarative lettering attached to a figure whose heroic credentials are cheerfully questionable.

Context and significance

Chromolithography offered nineteenth-century image-makers a particularly effective means of combining emphatic flat colour with tonal modelling and fine descriptive detail. In The modern crusader, those qualities serve both caricature and commerce. The broad red field makes the figure legible at a glance, while subtler transitions in the face, fur, glass and hat reward closer inspection. This balance between immediate impact and decorative finish was well suited to the increasingly crowded graphic world of the period.

The poster also preserves the era’s appetite for satire built from familiar cultural types. Its hero is not shown amid battle, pilgrimage or sacred architecture, but enthroned upon a goat and armed with a raised drink. That collision of elevated title and earthy good humour gives the work its distinctive energy: a compact visual joke shaped by the colours, exaggerations and confident theatricality of late nineteenth-century commercial art.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
