Ernest Godfridnon’s ‘t Wit Stoopke, created in 1909, turns a beverage poster into an unusually animated study of sociability. A loosely gathered company occupies a sunlit rural setting, with glasses in hand and conversation unfolding between figures in the foreground and those mingling farther back. Warm browns and sandy beige are set against fresh foliage, patches of blue sky and the weathered red roofs of nearby buildings. Rather than isolating a drink as a commercial object, Godfridnon builds an entire atmosphere around it: convivial, local and full of incidental human detail.

Godfridnon was a Belgian artist active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when illustrated posters had become a prominent part of European visual culture. Advertising increasingly relied upon memorable scenes, characters and settings rather than text alone, allowing commercial imagery to borrow the narrative richness of book illustration and genre painting. ‘t Wit Stoopke belongs to that world. Its persuasive force lies in the suggestion of shared custom and familiar company, presenting drinking as part of a recognisable communal occasion rather than as a detached act of consumption.

A closer look

At the lower centre, a man in a brimmed hat and waistcoat holds up a glass. His relaxed stance makes him the composition’s informal anchor, yet he does not dominate the gathering. The eye is encouraged to move past him along the pale pathway, which opens through the clustered figures and leads towards the buildings in the distance. This recession gives the crowded portrait format a surprising sense of depth, while the irregular distribution of people prevents the scene from feeling staged or overly symmetrical.

A contrasting figure appears at the upper left: a soldier in an ornamented uniform, also shown with a drink. The fine linear detail of his clothing distinguishes him from the earthier dress elsewhere and introduces a sharper, more ceremonial note into the rustic company. Across the upper right, further figures gather near a wooden fence. Their smaller scale and looser definition extend the social activity beyond the principal group, suggesting that the occasion continues outside the immediate foreground.

The setting is assembled through closely observed textures. Dense strokes describe folds of clothing and the soldier’s decoration, while softer passages shape the foliage and clouded sky. The central glass catches a small glint of light; leaves shift through several tones of green; and the roofs show subtle variations that lend the architecture an agreeably weathered character. Godfridnon balances these details with broader areas of colour, particularly the warm path and open sky, so that the composition remains legible despite its abundance of figures.

Context and significance

Early twentieth-century beverage advertising often sold more than the commodity itself: it offered a social setting, a mood and a sense of belonging. Godfridnon’s poster is particularly engaging because its commercial subject is absorbed into a fully imagined episode of regional life. Buildings, fences, uniform, clothing and landscape all contribute to the message, making the gathering appear rooted in a particular community even though no location is identified in the surviving catalogue information.

The result occupies a productive space between advertisement and narrative illustration. Its earthy palette and painterly visual character give the scene warmth, while the pathway and receding architecture organise its bustle with considerable care. Close inspection reveals a poster whose appeal depends not upon a single emphatic emblem, but upon the accumulation of gestures, glances, textures and small social exchanges.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40x50cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
