Linee guida generali sulle dimensioni

Continua a leggereAlphonse Mucha’s Sedící žena – studie k plakátu (Seated Woman – Study for a Poster), created in 1897, centres on a woman poised within a shallow, decorative space. Her blue clothing, patterned with floral motifs, gathers around the seated pose in broad folds, while pink blossoms punctuate her flowing hair. Behind her, a lightly shaded circular form acts almost like a halo or medallion, giving the figure the concentrated presence of a finished poster even as faint lines and softened passages retain the immediacy of a preparatory study.
Mucha was then developing the graphic language that would become closely associated with Art Nouveau and the visual culture of the Belle Époque. His posters made the female figure both subject and organising principle: hair, fabric, flowers and ornament could be arranged into a single rhythmic design, capable of attracting attention at a distance while rewarding closer inspection. This study reveals that process before typography and commercial information took command. The pose, silhouette and surrounding decoration are not incidental embellishments but the underlying architecture from which a poster could be built.
A closer look
The composition is tightly vertical, with the woman occupying almost the entire pictorial field. Her body turns gently within the narrow format, creating a sequence of curves rather than a rigid frontal pose. Long strands of hair frame the face and descend towards the shoulders, their fine curls echoed by the patterned fabric and the pale swirls of the background. Mucha’s line is particularly expressive here: contour gives the figure clarity, while lighter internal marks suggest folds, shadow and texture without weighing down the design.
Colour is restrained but carefully balanced. Cool blue dominates the garment, set against warm, muted pinks, soft beige and touches of earthy green. The blossoms in the woman’s hair provide the brightest accents, separating her profile from the subdued circular backdrop. Across the clothing, floral ornament shifts between legible motif and atmospheric pattern, so that the figure seems at once dressed in fabric and absorbed into the surrounding decoration. A partly obscured fan-like accessory introduces another compact area of detail near the hands.
The circular element behind the sitter performs several visual tasks. It reinforces the curve of her upper body, isolates the head and hair, and prevents the pale background from feeling empty. Its faint interior marks remain secondary to the figure, preserving the study’s delicate hierarchy. Closer inspection also reveals places where forms have not been fully resolved: contours soften, background lines trail away and passages of colour blend into the ground. These traces make visible the exploratory character of the work.
Context and significance
By 1897, Mucha had become a leading presence in Parisian poster design, following the success of his theatrical work for the actress Sarah Bernhardt. His distinctive compositions—elongated formats, elegant women, botanical ornament and emphatic linear rhythms—were widely recognised and helped shape the international appearance of Art Nouveau. Yet Sedící žena – studie k plakátu is especially revealing because it strips that familiar language back to its foundations. Without a slogan, product name or block of lettering, attention falls on the decisions that precede the final graphic statement: the angle of a shoulder, the fall of fabric, the distribution of colour and the enclosing geometry of the background.
The result occupies a compelling space between working drawing and autonomous decorative composition. It has the looseness of an idea still being tested, but already contains the visual discipline for which Mucha’s posters are known. Figure and ornament do not compete; each is shaped in relation to the other, allowing a quiet seated pose to acquire the authority and clarity of public graphic art.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40x50cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Most orders are made locally and delivered in around 2–3 working days, depending on the product, size and destination.
We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
