Beneath the decorative word “MENU”, a reclining woman in flowing dress is attended by two companions, one bearing a plate of fruit. Their gestures, garments and curling hair merge with the surrounding ornament, so that hospitality becomes a scene of languid, theatrical ceremony. Strong black contours set against warm beige and pale ground give the design a crisp graphic presence despite its profusion of detail.
The occasion connected two defining figures of fin-de-siècle Paris. Sarah Bernhardt was among the era’s most celebrated stage performers, while Mucha’s association with her helped establish the visual language for which he became renowned. Their collaboration began with his poster for Bernhardt’s production of Gismonda in the mid-1890s and extended across theatrical posters and related designs. This menu, made for a banquet honouring the actress, belongs to that fertile period: a practical object elevated through illustration, typography and ornament into a carefully unified work of Art Nouveau design.
A closer look
The composition is vertically organised but deliberately asymmetrical. The principal woman reclines across the central foreground, her body forming a long, relaxed curve rather than a rigid axis. Floral embellishments thread through her hair and clothing, while softly articulated folds gather around her figure. At the left, an attendant approaches with a dish of rounded fruit; the repeated circles introduce a compact decorative rhythm amid the longer lines of limbs, drapery and hair.
On the right, another figure’s sweeping hair creates a sense of movement without disturbing the scene’s measured poise. Mucha uses curls and scrolls almost interchangeably: strands of hair echo botanical motifs, folds of fabric continue into ornamental arabesques, and the human figures seem embedded within the design rather than placed in front of it. This continuity between body and decoration is central to the composition’s elegance.
The restrained palette allows the linework to carry much of the visual interest. Dense black passages define faces, fabric and border elements, while broad areas of cream and white prevent the design from becoming heavy. Across the upper edge and lower corners, stylised floral and scrolling forms establish a frame, drawing attention back towards the figures and the prominent heading. The relatively flat tonal structure, with little conventional modelling or deep perspective, reinforces the menu’s graphic character. A visible “Mucha” signature at the lower right completes the composition, while the accompanying French caption identifies it as a design for one of three menus for the Sarah Bernhardt banquet of December 1896.

Mucha’s work is closely associated with the flowering of Art Nouveau during the Belle Époque, when distinctions between fine art, advertising, theatre and decorative design were unusually fluid. Posters, programmes, packaging and menus could all become vehicles for ambitious visual invention. His characteristic combination of sinuous contour, stylised plant forms, decorative lettering and graceful female figures proved especially suited to this expanded field of modern graphic art.
Here, the banquet subject is conveyed without literal abundance. Rather than cataloguing dishes, Mucha builds an atmosphere around presentation and ritual: fruit offered on a plate, attendants gathered around a reclining figure, and every contour shaped into ornament. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
