A crown of narrow red blossoms occupies the upper centre, its vivid colour sharpened by green accents, while long, blade-like leaves descend and arc outwards beneath it. Set against an uncluttered light beige ground, the specimen appears at once structurally precise and unexpectedly dramatic: the dense, flame-like flower head is counterbalanced by the looser rhythm of the foliage.
Redouté was celebrated for botanical studies that united scientific usefulness with an unusually refined sense of composition. In the early nineteenth century, such illustrations served collectors, botanists and a growing readership interested in natural history, making unfamiliar plants legible through carefully observed form and colour. Yet Redouté’s plates were never merely diagrams. His command of contour, tonal transition and spacious arrangement helped establish a model of botanical illustration in which exact observation and decorative grace could coexist.
A closer look
The composition encourages the eye to travel downwards. At the summit, elongated red petals project in a spiky cluster, their slender shapes crossing and separating to create a lively, irregular silhouette. Fine scoring within the blossoms suggests their texture, while small greenish tufts around the base of the flower head distinguish emerging growth from the mature red forms. The transition between flower and foliage is gradual rather than abrupt, with green details threading the two sections together.
Below, the leaves overlap in layered fans. Some rise close to the central stem; others bend outwards or curl around it, particularly among the thinner leaves at lower left. Pale linear veins run through their surfaces, and the shading shifts from deep green to softer, yellowed tones, describing how each leaf turns towards or away from the light. Slight browning along a few edges prevents the plant from appearing artificially perfect, preserving the particularities of a living specimen.
Negative space is essential to the plate’s clarity. The generous pale field isolates each contour, allowing even the finest tips and crossings to remain distinct. Near the base, muted brown gives the plant a subtle visual anchor, while the lower inscription identifies it as “Pitcairnia Latifolia”; the French name, “Pitcairnie à large Feuille”, is also recorded at the lower right. These restrained labels preserve the scientific character of the study without disturbing its balance.

Redouté worked at a moment when botanical knowledge circulated through cultivated collections, specialist publications and increasingly sophisticated plant imagery. Illustration had to communicate identifying features clearly, but it also shaped how readers encountered species they might never see in life. We print and frame maps and artwork in 24 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
