Continua a leggereAugust Macke’s Unser Garten mit blühenden Rabatten (Our Garden with Blooming Flower Beds), painted in 1912, turns a familiar garden into a buoyant structure of colour. A narrow pink path enters from the lower centre and bends between crowded borders, drawing the eye towards warm-toned buildings partly concealed by foliage. Flowers appear not as meticulously described specimens but as flickering patches of pink, yellow and white, held together by broad areas of green and the deeper blue-green mass of the trees.
Macke was a leading member of Der Blaue Reiter, the Munich-based association that became central to German Expressionism. Its artists sought alternatives to naturalistic representation, particularly through heightened colour and simplified form. Here, Macke applies those ideas to an intimate, everyday subject. The garden remains recognisable and spatially coherent, yet observation is reshaped into a decorative rhythm: paths, planting beds, walls and tree canopies become interlocking zones of luminous pigment. The result is less a botanical record than an account of the garden’s visual abundance.
A closer look
The curving path gives the composition its underlying momentum. Its unusual rosy tone sets it apart from the surrounding grass, while dark green contours along its edges make the route appear to thread through the vegetation. As it narrows towards the centre, it establishes depth without disturbing the painting’s emphatically flat, graphic organisation. A subtle archway or opening lies near the path’s destination, forming a small visual threshold between the densely planted foreground and the architecture beyond.
Across the lower half, Macke builds the flower beds from clusters of contrasting marks. Bright pinks and yellows provide the strongest accents, while small touches of white punctuate the darker leaves. The plants are differentiated through changes in colour, scale and brushwork rather than precise outlines. Some passages are visibly textured, adding physical energy to forms that have otherwise been broadly simplified. The darker foliage is especially important: it acts as a framework around the lighter blooms, preventing the profusion of colour from dissolving into a single ornamental field.
In the upper right, yellow and reddish buildings introduce a measured architectural counterpoint to the garden’s irregular growth. Dark window frames stand out crisply against the warmer walls, while trees and shrubs partially interrupt the façades. On the opposite side, tall blue-green trees form a dense screen. This balance of organic and geometric shapes—leafy masses against windows and walls, winding path against upright trunks—gives the scene its lively asymmetry.
Context and significance
Created at a particularly fertile moment in the European avant-garde, the painting reflects Macke’s characteristic interest in reconciling modern formal experiment with pleasurable scenes of daily life. Unlike the more psychologically charged strain of Expressionism, his work often approached colour through gardens, parks, promenades and other spaces of leisure. In Unser Garten mit blühenden Rabatten, the radical element is therefore quiet but pervasive: conventional perspective is compressed, local colour is heightened, and the observed world is reorganised into broad, rhythmic relationships.
The garden is neither wholly naturalistic nor fully abstract. Its buildings, flowers and pathway remain legible, but each also functions as part of a larger chromatic pattern. That balance gives the painting its distinctive lyricism. Macke preserves the sense of moving through a cultivated space while allowing colour to become the principal subject—green pressing against pink, cool trees answering warm walls, and scattered blossoms animating almost every corner of the foreground.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
