Hans Rudi Erdt’s Müller Extra Sekt Matheus Müller Hoflieferant Eltville, created in 1908, turns an advertisement for sparkling wine into a brisk...

Hans Rudi Erdt’s Müller Extra Sekt Matheus Müller Hoflieferant Eltville, created in 1908, turns an advertisement for sparkling wine into a brisk theatrical encounter. A sharply dressed man in a brilliant red coat raises a triangular glass, his enlarged figure commanding the pale ground while a row of dark bottles anchors the lower edge. Above him, the emphatic words “Müller Extra” supply an immediate graphic refrain: brand, figure and product are arranged to be understood almost at a glance.

Erdt was a prominent figure in early twentieth-century German poster design, working at a moment when commercial artists were developing a more direct visual language for the modern city. Instead of depending upon densely illustrated scenes or lengthy persuasive text, designers increasingly used simplified silhouettes, forceful lettering and concentrated areas of colour. This economy suited posters intended to compete for attention in streets, stations and other busy public spaces. Here, the designation “Hoflieferant” — purveyor to a royal or princely court — lends the Müller name an air of established prestige, while Eltville situates it within Germany’s wine-producing Rhine region.

A closer look

The composition is deliberately uneven but carefully balanced. The man occupies the left and central portions of the poster, his upright body establishing a strong vertical movement beneath the headline. His red clothing, picked out with yellow, white and dark accents, is far more decorative than the cream-coloured background. Particular attention is given to the cuffs and collar, where small patterned passages temper the otherwise broad, flat areas of colour. His pale hair and the white highlights of the costume sharpen his silhouette still further.

The raised glass provides a compact focal point. Its angular bowl contrasts with both the softer contours of the figure and the cylindrical bottles below, while bright reflections suggest the lively surface of the sparkling wine. Erdt does not construct deep pictorial space: figure, lettering and bottles occupy a compressed graphic plane. That flatness makes each component legible, allowing the eye to travel rapidly from the drinker’s gesture to the product being advertised.

Along the lower edge, the bottles form a dark horizontal counterweight to the standing figure. Their labels introduce a denser register of detail, including the words “Matheus Müller Hoflieferant” and small crest-like devices. Black and grey give these forms visual weight against the warm cream ground, while flashes of red and yellow connect them to the man’s costume. The result is a tightly controlled palette in which every strong colour helps to bind the advertisement together.

Context and significance

The poster belongs to a decisive phase in European advertising, when the poster was becoming an autonomous branch of graphic design rather than merely an illustrated notice. Erdt’s streamlined treatment reflects the clarity associated with German Plakatstil, or “poster style”: a recognisable subject, a restricted palette, bold contours and typography designed for rapid comprehension. The product is not surrounded by elaborate claims. Instead, social character does much of the persuasive work. The poised figure, courtly costume and raised glass associate Müller Extra Sekt with ceremony, refinement and convivial display.

Yet the design remains strikingly modern in its discipline. The historical flavour of the costume is set against assertive lettering and simplified colour blocking, bringing tradition into the visual language of contemporary commerce. That tension — between inherited prestige and modern graphic immediacy — gives Erdt’s 1908 advertisement much of its enduring interest.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
