Mouth of the Lower Grand Canon presents the Colorado River passing between immense, many-layered walls of rock, their warm reds, ochres and browns set against cool blue water and a pale, clouded sky. The full caption identifies the scene as the “Mouth of the Lower Grand Cañon of the Colorado River” and dates the recorded view to 1871; this colour lithograph belongs to the published record of the survey completed in 1889. Its vertical composition gives the landscape an unusual upward force: rock spires rise towards the upper centre while the river forms a calm, curving route into the canyon’s depths.

The plate formed part of the Geographical Report produced by the United States Geographical Surveys West of the 100th Meridian, commonly known as Wheeler’s Survey. Published across seven text volumes between 1875 and 1889, the final report helped document and analyse the geography of the American West at a time when mapping, geology and visual representation were closely entwined. Designated Plate XX and described as an illuminated sketch derived from a photograph, this view occupies a fascinating position between field record and landscape art. The accompanying account acknowledged that the canyon’s multicoloured strata exceeded an artist’s ability to reproduce them fully—a revealing admission of both the ambitions and limitations of nineteenth-century colour illustration.

A closer look

The river occupies the lower centre of the composition, where restrained blue tones and fine ripples create a quiet surface amid the canyon’s fractured forms. Its smooth bend draws the eye steadily into the distance, narrowing as it approaches the passage between the cliffs. Near the bank, a minute human figure is almost absorbed by the terrain. Easy to miss at first, this small presence provides the clearest measure of scale, making the surrounding formations appear still more formidable.

On either side, the canyon walls are built from overlapping planes rather than presented as a single continuous mass. The left side recedes through successive ridges, while a rocky outcrop on the right projects towards the foreground, sharpening the sense of three-dimensional space. Fine linear marks follow the sedimentary beds, articulating ledges, fissures and tilted strata. Sunlight catches selected faces in muted gold and burnt orange; adjacent slopes fall into softer grey-brown shadow. This alternation of illumination and shade allows the geology itself to structure the scene.

Above the gorge, a generous expanse of sky prevents the towering formations from overwhelming the composition. Pale blue passes into light grey around loose banks of cloud, while the brightest atmospheric light gathers behind the central pinnacles. The effect is not merely picturesque: it makes the canyon appear changeable, its colours dependent upon weather and the angle of the sun. Along the upper edge, the survey title and plate number establish the work’s institutional setting, while the formal caption below fixes both location and date.

Context and significance

Wheeler’s Survey was part of the wider nineteenth-century effort to map the western United States through coordinated topographical, geological and geographical study. Its reports brought together maps, written observations and visual plates, allowing distant readers to encounter landscapes that were still unfamiliar to many outside the region. The separately published topographic and geological atlases extended that documentary purpose, while views such as this made scientific information legible through colour, atmosphere and carefully constructed depth.

That dual identity gives Mouth of the Lower Grand Canon its enduring interest. It is at once a record of terrain, an interpretation of geological structure and a dramatic landscape in its own right. The tiny riverside figure, luminous strata and cool thread of water turn the canyon’s vast scale into something immediately perceptible, while the printed survey headings preserve the image’s origins in the systematic study of the American West.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.

If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.

The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.

Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.

Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.

Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.

Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.

Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.

This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
